Are you viewing the playback directly on your NVR or via a (remotely) connected PC, smartphone er something else? This sound like a network/bandwidth related issue, so you probably need to share a bit more in order for people to assist.

My DS-2CD2342WD-I have been upgraded to V5.4.1 build 160525. I also have a DS-2DE4220IW-D, but it is still on V5.4.0 build 160418, which has an email bug. No release for that yet.

I have just gone from 5.4.0 to 5.4.1 and my email alerts are back on, so this has been fixed. I am not a Gmail user.
