Same here, problems with alerts in the last two "point" releases, rolling back (just slightly) to 5.8.9.1 fixes it for me.

You seem particularly well positioned to re-try this setup, given your past experiences and knowledge of the results. Any chance you might be willing to "lead the way" for the rest of us? Or was the whole exercise so distasteful that you don't really want to give it another go?

You are correct on almost all of those points, except for the transition year from swing-axle to I.R.S. (C.V.-joint) real axles (1968 was the last year for swing-axles, 1969 had the C.V. joints), and wide-five pattern wheels (1967 still had them, 1968 had the narrow 4-bolt pattern). Not that...

Fortunately, we get somewhat more detailed update notes from @fenderman when most full "point" (second to last octet or higher) releases come out. Often with a day or two delay, but thankfully they are more complete than the extremely brief release notes on the "update screen".

Don't worry too much about the preferred and alternate DNS settings, they aren't particularly relevant to this VPN problem. If in doubt, use Quad9 (9.9.9.9), Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and /or Google (8.8.8.8), your choice of preference order. If you say that you can definitely access the web...

Sounds more like a cable termination/corrosion issue if I were to venture a guess. Bummer about it being so difficult to get to, but that may be the key to solving this.
