    Inbound and Outbound vpn's

Hi All, Hope you had a good Christmas/enjoying the holidays. So when I say VPN for work changing, we used to use Cisco and Cisco's SSL style of vpn connectivity now we are using Palo Alto Global Protect. So with Cisco we would effectively create a vpn to the firewall then SSL to a desktop in...

    Inbound and Outbound vpn's

Ive put this under chit-chat as it sounds like its more of a generic question. So currently I have an outbound vpn running on my router so that I can access my NVR, however my employer is changing how we access the office when working from home. They want us to use a vpn service to access the...

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Would be interesting to know given that most of us probably look at various reviews to make our decisions on what we buy , for example ASUS (but then what xdsl router is NOT fully or in part made in China ? )make the top 10 on most UK based review sites.

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

So made another step forward well probably more of a leap at this stage. My router has two places to set DNS. 1. In the LAN Settings 2. In the WAN Settings I had 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 in the LAN settings and automatic for the WAN, as soon as I changed that to manual and put 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 in, the...

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Hi, Still getting the exclamation mark . However when I try to ping my new address thats been in place for over 48 hours it does not ping (not surprised) but it does resolve to an ip address that is owned by Vodafone - so a bit closer maybe ?

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

I believe so , listed on their website is "ASUS DSL-AC55U Firmware version v1.1.2.3_743" and my router shows Firmware Version:1.1.2.3_743

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Logged a ticket with ASUS support - they are next to useless and unable to help. Phone VPN works fine using openvpn client so looks like I'm stuck with that.

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

I looked at the google thing but that suggests you need your own domain (so an additional cost and additional complexity), there doesn't seem to be a "free" DDNS service anymore (yes I know there is but when you look at the domains they offer they dont match what the router supports).

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Nope - No multinatting (that I am aware of or can find evidence of). Private lan is normal 192.168.x.x and WAN address is 84.x.x.x I have since read that the asus service is rather unreliable, however I have logged a support ticket with them.

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Okay so some success !! I have found the issue with my asus router and fixed that , so I enabled the open vpn server on it and exported the configuration file. Installed open vpn client on my android phone and imported the configuration file and it connected instantly. I could then load the...

    BI 5 and Port Fowarding/DDNS

Many ISP's allow the use of 3rd party routers "at your risk" that is effectively unsupported. The Vodafone router is a generic grey box - I think its just a "chinese" unit wrapped in a vodafone case. So I either need to replace the Vodafone and Asus routers with something more configurable or...

    BI 5 and Port Fowarding/DDNS

Hi All, First off thank you everybody for your help thus far, it is appreciated. Unfortunately trying to keep pace/learn technology at 55+ can be very frustrating and somewhat confusing. So unfortunately I have had to stop using my Asus DSL-55U , it appears to have something wrong with it and...

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

Okay so on "playing" around I realise this is never going to work - given my ability and understanding of how it works. What I am trying to achieve is the ability to view my security camera's/recordings from wherever I am - I will not be able to do this at work (priority as there most of the...

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

So my ASUS router does support either PPTP or OpenVPN as a server - so thats positive . When I say NVR I'm probably confusing the issue its actually a Dell Optiplex running Blueiris 5 with some big SAS disks. So I enable OpenVPN on my router and then install some sort of client on the Blueiris...

    Confused - Sort Of - VPN/Port Forwarding

So as I have been told in a previous thread - Do NOT use Port Forwarding, however a lot of folks across various forums all say to use Port Forwarding and a VPN. I registered for a VPN (SurfShark) but for the life of me could not get remote access to my NVR ,So I have either completely...

Would like your thoughts for Managed Switch

I guess you can sit in one of 2 camps on this - Cisco like all manufacturers regularly release updates to fix bugs, vulnerabilities , performance issues etc. If you are behind a firewall and that is kept on spot then you are probably okay. The other camp is that its a business class device and...

Would like your thoughts for Managed Switch

I use Netgear for home and we use a mixture of Netgear/Cisco at work. The Netgear switches are managed via a web gui so no cli knowledge needed. The only thing I would say about Cisco switches is the need to keep them updated - you wont be able to do this with out an account - unless you know...

    BI 5 and Port Fowarding/DDNS

Sorry for the protracted response - life stuff got in the way. The wan address was made up :-) So all I get is a constant "!"which when I hover over it it says "unable to connect to the internet" - which is incorrect as I am connected. My ISP is Vodafone here in the UK

Apologies if this is not in the correct place , I guess it could also go under networking. I have BI 5 configured for web access. Local Address - 192.168.0.6 Port 88 Wan Address *Edited* I have an ASUS DSL55U and currently have port forwarding enabled, however my wan ip address changes...
