Computer recommendation for 7 HD cameras with BlueIris

Microsoft has made it really easy with windows 10...the license is registered with MS and is tied to your hardware...MS will know that the pc is licensed. All you need to do is user the microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable usb drive...its really easy...
Worst case HP/dell will send you media on a cd/usb drive for free and overnight..but you dont need it.

If you go with an EliteDesk, do you recommend doing two Purple drives for the 3.5" drives or do a purple and a traditional drive?

Only the elitedesk tower can hold 2 3.5 drives...if you are buying new drives get purple and a small ssd for the OS..

I thought the SFF build allowed for 1-2.5" drive and two 3.5" drives, am I incorrect?

yes that is not correct....the sff allows for one 2.5 and one 3.5...if you remove the dvd drive i think you can get another 2.5 in there.

Darn. I guess one Purple HDD should be enough. Can you expand the storage with external drives effectively, or does that sacrifice performance?

Attaching the drive to eSATA or a SATA connector will provide you with better performance overall, and greatly reduce CPU usage (CPU is interrupted only when needed with the SATA controller as the controller does all the work instead). Now I don't know if you will notice the different or not. I don't have any experience running anything over two cams and on wireless, but my guess you would. I run a WD black internally (my system in my main computer also) and it all worked great until I changed the file format to .avi. Now Blueiris locks up on me often and it seems converting it to avi files, slowed it down as now I can hear the drive writing, unlike before where I heard it only click once or twice.

In the category of "No Good Thread Goes Un-Hijacked", I thought I would jump on here since my requirements are similar:

My current system is also my primary desktop PC, and that obviously needs to change:

CPU: AMD A8-3870
RAM: 16GB
3 x 2M@15fps Direct to Disk
4 x 720h@7fps Direct to Disk
60-70% load depending upon console viewing and recording

(The A6 based computer I tried to get online yesterday that was collecting dust hits 100% load with this setup in case others are grappling with the similar AMD CPUs. Just 2 of the 2M cameras put it over 50% with the console closed.)

Ultimately, in addition to setting up a dedicated NVR, the intention is to get those 720h cameras out of there and possibly add an 8th camera. There is zero potential to add more cameras beyond that.

Just looking at threads here and at what is for sale, I'm wondering if there is a lower price point sweet spot for a system of this size than the i5-6500. I'm getting that the i5-6500 is the middle-of-road/jack-of-all-trades in the bang for the buck category, but is it overkill and could I save a few bucks with something else like the G1 version of the EliteDesk?

It looks to me that performance-wise, it's about equal according to PassMark, though the earlier generation has a higher power rating, so perhaps the question I should really be asking is whether the energy used is going to be that much of a difference?

Answering my own questions on power consumption, it looks like the savings of the 6500 over the 4590 would take over 5 years to make the 6500 a priority given that the 4590 based systems run a solid $100 cheaper second hand. So I guess that puts us back into the question of performance. Call that a wash?

Note that 6500 does support h.265 hardware acceleration, which BI does not yet support but i would guess would be implemented in the future...the 4590 does not...
Also, the 4590 is older and would likely have more wear...100 will get you a better, newer system with more warranty.

Great points. I'll be looking for a year warranty either way, but unless the 4590 based systems have a significantly higher failure rate, that's probably not a strong point to get hung up on for used systems in this price range. The h.265 issue however has me on the fence as it remains 'vapor' in BI. Clearly, the cost savings in storage _could_ be more than made up for with h.265 actually functioning. Hoping BI devs have that in works for release soon!
