Thanks for the great information. This forum saved countless hours. I was able to get the frame rates down from 70%-90% to below 35%.

One issue I'm now having now is when Hardware Acceleration is enabled, I loose my only indoor camera hooked up to an AXIS M7011 Video Encoder.

Still with the tweaks, I'm down to 55%- 65% CPU rate. Am I SOL with Hardware Acceleration? Would be nice to get back down to 35%.
you can disable HA only for that camera/encoder....

a buddy just pointed this out to me today, after pulling the trigger on it for his new BI setup:
Amazon.com: HP Pavilion 550-177c Desktop PC - Intel Core i7-6700 3.4Ghz 12GB 1TB DVDRW Windows 10 Home (Certified Refurbished): Computers & Accessories
i7-6700 @3.4Ghz w/ 12GB RAM & 1TB HD for $499...
THANK YOU! I snagged a Dell 9020 SFF with an I7 -4790 from this seller for $329 and free shipping after seeing this post. It's now running BI and my Plex server with no problem. Computer is in great shape and runs great. edit- Sorry it was $349, but still a great deal!

Damn, good snag. I just bought an i5-4670k build for the same amount and I'm worried the cpu won't handle my 8 cameras well

the number of cameras is not a good measure...it will vary by the resolution, fps and whether the console is open...

9 are 3 and 4mp cameras all running between 20 and 30 fps, about half are at full resolution and the other half at 1080p. I keep the console closed unless I need to make changes. 1 is a usb webcam cam connected directly to the computer.

Great thread. Thank you for the insight fenderman.

I'm planning a 4 camera 3 MP with good to great resolution, 5 to 15 FPS.

So I've been looking on eBay and Dell outlet for Optiplex and EliteDesk i5-4590, i5-6500, and i7-4790. Any others to be on the lookout for?

get the i5-6500....they are often about 300...the small form factor elitedesk has room for a 2.5 and 3.5 drive...(NOT THE MINI OR USDT, the SFF)
you can easily run an i3, but the price difference is negligable..also consider the 2mp dahua starlight turret, it will perform much better than the 3mp cams at night and low light.

The i5-4670k actually has a higher passmark score than the i5-6500 so personally I would't hesitate to buy either one.

There is more to a cpu than the passmark (and the difference is so small its not relevant)...the i5-6500 has improved intel hd graphics which BI uses for hardware acceration and will by default likely be newer and unused than a haswell. Finally, haswell intel hd does not have the ability to hardware acceleration of h.265...the skylake does and while I dont believe BI currently supports hardware acceleration for h.265 (while it does support h.265) it will likely in the future. Unless its significantly cheaper it makes no sense.

How important is adding a surveillance hard drive like a Seagate Skyhawk over, say, the included 500GB (aside from storage capacity).

you overpaid...i5-6500 skylake systems are available for that price.
nah, i was looking for an optiplex off the dell outlet but then this one popped up on reddit. it's got a good motherboard, 500gb ssd, 2tb hdd, and the 4670k. i WANTED a 4790k system, but im hoping this will suffice my 8 cams running 2.0mp @ 30fps until im ready to move and install a new system entirely.

if it doesnt meet my needs, i'll just buy a 4790k chip, swap it in the motherboard, and use the 4670k to start building the HTPC I've put off for a long time.
