It says in spec sheets if it has it; I spotted it before I got the camera.. ive seen it on other cameras, but they might of been big sensor cameras ultra cameras also
Having now taken a look at the spec sheet for the 8231 I see that SSA is now included in the spec on Dahua's website - but not on older specs still being used on suppliers' websites. I'm guessing there has been a hardware upgrade and makes you think twice about buying any camera from suppliers boasting existing stock on the shelf....

Another change for users to note is that the current spec has changed to 802.3at which I am using. Mine also work on my little 802.3af TP-Link injector and would wager a few dollars the new ones would too.

have you reset yours to defaults after doing an update? sometimes thats nessicary to see new features.. also some features can be disabled when others are enabled, it may be possible you have something else running that prevents SSA from being enabled.. and thus its hidden.. I know setting anti-flicker usually nukes a few backlight options.

here's an example of SSA with me in motion, clearly no detail lost... its not all show:
Well a little loss of detail in the distance there's some over sharpening and the whites in your arm are getting crushed a bit. As long as it doesn't do that to somebody's face it's a great image for a security cam.

Good idea Nayr but still no joy after default config. Dash it - didn't save the cofig I was running with.

That's great. Would you expect the same for night?
I thought it was impressive in the night shot of just the car, SSA off the windows were basically black; SSA on you could make out details of the stuff you have inside the car through the windows! Difference btw seeing a person IN the car (say they got in on the other side or something) and not seeing them at all.

I have to say your review of this 8232 Ultra is great so far but really a buzz kill for all the interest you had going on for the hdw5231r-z, ha-ha.

But I did buy 4 hdw5231r-z's and they are pretty great so far just in default settings without much tweaking yet and a better price point for me.
This is another instance of the old, "for just a little more look what you can get" story....hate to see it just days after getting the other ones though.

What I'd really like to see is this level feature \ quality pic on a new version of the mini blackface with outdoor rating....and minimal price bump of course.

Cool I have this LE 100W Super Bright Outdoor LED Flood Lights, 250W HPS Bulb Equivalent, Waterproof IP65, 10150lm, Daylight White, 6000K, Security Lights, Floodlight, 5 Years Warrenty - - Amazon.com

I am 1' from sidewalk and 10' from street and street is 30' wide.

About to mount my PTZ or PTZ's on the pole and 2 for pates going each direction and ordered another cam IPC-HFW5231E-Z and deciding if I want both the PTZ's on pole so ordered the PFB303S mount as well.

Figure I will get another PTZ for 4th story deck and to watch back door. This way I can weather watch and see downtown Houston and backdoor with one camera.

wow thats a bright one, two of these do so well at lighting my front yard I think I'll get the lower power variant for the front door.. gonna replace 4 100W HPS lights when all said and done, so should be a nice power saving.

Gain Priority: 50% - I like this one, not as well lit in the distance but I like the detail

There is some serious shadowing going on so those new lights must be brighter than they appear on the Amazon listing...I'd have thought they were more spot\down directed but it is clearly throwing a shadow from you and the car.

SSA on looks like it gives better detail.

I'm not familiar with Gain Priority yet...what's its function?

Would you say a color night image with good lighting would be preferable to using a B&W night image with good IR coverage?

I would say color with good lighting is always better and preferred, depends on the situation though, if you need giant lights all over that draw lots of power and you are not okay with that then night vision is gonna be cheaper probably, how much, I don't know. Also your neighbors may not like feeling like that live in a prison lol.
