Best Use of Two Routers in the same LAN ?

I have a very good WiFi router but it does not support VPN, or other advanced networking functions. So, my remedy is to purchase a good networking router w/o the WiFi function and add it to my server LAN. What I wonder; Is there a better use for the WiFi router than disabling it and having just be an AP? It does have 4 LAN ports, and two USB ports.

i would swap the router out for one of these RT-AC68U | Networking | ASUS UK it supports vpn sell your old router to cover the extra £50

Also the FVS336G-300NAS is pretty old and only attains ~16mbps VPN throughput

I must have picked the wrong Ebay listing. There were several. Also the version 3 (v3) is a recent new release and I think I read that the VPN throughput was in the range of 350 mbps.

I talked to the guy at the trendnet tech support and they tell me that although the DD-WRT could be flashed into this routed it has to be done before the trendnet firmware is installed and also even if it were, a vpn would not be supported by this router. So apparently this is a yes but no. Go figure.

Very good is a bit of a stretch: TRENDnet TEW-818DRU AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Router Reviewed - SmallNetBuilder

There's no kind way to put this, but there is really no reason to recommend the TRENDnet TEW-818DRU. It's not even aggressively priced, because you can get the Linksys EA6900 for about the same $175 - $180 or so. Just pass this one by, folks.

That said it may very well be good enough for your needs. You already own it, you might as well try putting 3rd party firmware on it with VPN support. If that proves too difficult or preforms poorly just pick up an Asus with built-in VPN support.

I like the idea of OpenVPN with windows. If I have the right routers I'll get back into it and try to make it work for my networks.

If you can get ahold of two example config files you should pretty much be able to just put in your Public IPs and change the networks it lets go across

the router has a inbuilt VPN and it can also be flash with Asuswrt-Merlin FIRMWARE adding additional features
