Hi,

I notice that some Hikvision NVR's have a fan on the back and some don't seem to.

It looks like maybe its the PoE versions that have the fan.

Just wondering if the fan runs constantly, or varies speed,

Maybe if nothing is being powered from Poe, then it does not need to spin for example?

Thanks!.

are you sleeping in the same room as your NVR? Ive never heard any complaints about them being too loud.. why the drive for a noiseless NVR?

I believe there are folks who complain about the noise level of some NVR's...even the hikvision....you can get one without poe and just an 8 port fanless switch or modify the nvr with a large fan.

I'm guessing most nvr's have a fan, the only thing being different is the vents. The only unit I had that was fanless was a qsee Dvr. My current dahua Dvr had the fan go bad and although I have the replacement, I haven't installed it yet. I hate fans. I could never sleep in the same room with that. I don't even like it in the back room. I just pass that room and the noise annoys me. The fans in these units are too noisy. We had an openeye Dvr at work that sounded like a vacuum cleaner, seriously. It was that loud. I understand fans are needed, but they should be good quality low noise ones.

I completely agree about hating the noise... but these are 24/7 loaded devices, they need cooling at least for the hdd's if you want them to last.. typically making it more quiet means lowering the fan's speed and that decreases cooling ability. I hate noise so much I went to great effort to sound proof my server room and all my rack mount servers are giant ones I make with water cooling.. not thin 1U units that blast 110db of fans..

Your NVR should be secured physically, and luckily FAN's are a high frequency noise and it is very easy to block.. its the low frequency that is hard/expensive to sound-proof.. I would think installing it in a closet with a solid wood door would be more than enough.. but it wouldn't be my bedroom closet thats forsure :)
Trying to build/find a perfectly silent system can be alot more difficult than getting a quiet one and putting it in a hardwood cabinet or something.

My mini NFS Server is totally fanless and silent, the cameras just save directly to ftp so it can be a tiny fanless server if I use a decent external HDD enclosure that has adequate radiant cooling and a WD purple drive that sips power well, PogoPlug has no fans and you can get multi-port PoE injectors with no fans.. just need a fanless switch.. but your sacrificing a bunch of nice NVR features like video output/split display w/synced playback, etc. To get a completely silent system your going to have to be willing to sacrifice something (like longevity and cash), at least thats my experience :)

Just any standard computer fan.

You can go with a 80mm or 120mm, the 120mm ones are very quiet. If you get a Noctua fan or similar they can be almost silent.

You will need to cut a hole in the top of the case and remove the internal cover of the power supply.

Other thoughts I will add.

Placing the fan closer to towards the power supply may be a better place for it.

Also I would orient the fan so it sucks air through the case and up out the top (sticker facing up). This is because hot air rises and its easier to suck through air then it is to blow it through. Then you add a metal grill or even a filter.

Gotta love those thin 120mm fans you could probably even fit that underneath the cover. It'd be quite tight though i'd imagine.

Even cheap 120mm fans will be quieter than that noisy little bugger. So if you're on a tight tight budget give any 120mm a try.

I was going to go with a Noctua 40mm for mine, since I don't use the POE section of my NVR so heat won't be that big of an issue. For the price I found them for AU$40, although I did find one for AU$30 I didn't think it was worth it (the NVR sits near me on the workstation) so i just added a resistor to the stock fan to reduce the speed. It works out only to be a drop of 1v across the resistor but makes a noticeable difference in noise. That is until the nvr gets slightly warmer than normal and the fans increase their speed they get audible again.

120mm slim will fit between fan and HDD in 76xx

120mm normal size will fit in the huge bit of space of a 7604.

Just dropping from 12v to 10v makes a huge difference in noise reduction. So if you are on a tight budget, get a cheap 120mm and fit a resistor to reduce it to 10v. Or Use the +5V as ground (giving you 7V).

The PSU inside the 7608 does not directly have a +5v rail, only a +12v rail and a +52v rail (POE models). The only source for it inside the system is directly off the feed for the hard drives. I'm not sure if this works on this boards type of regulation as I've never tried it. It does work fine on ATX power supplies which I've been doing for years especially on noisy cheap fans.

If you get a fan with a molex header on both sides you can even just plug it directly into the board where the HDD power comes out. If you switch the pins for 7v operation make sure you swap the pins on the other side.

If you do end up using a resistor, do keep in mind they get warm/hot. The higher the resistance the more energy they have to dissipate as energy cannot be destroyed it is merely converted, in this case into heat. Also most importantly use a resistor of the correct rating. I used a 1 watt resistor which exceeded the 0.75 watt dissipation I needed.

Didn't think about that... You could wire it up to one of the spare SATA ports but if you have 2x HDD then I think the extra power from the fan will be too much. Better to use a resistor, or get a £10/$10 (yes we get ripped off here in the UK) decent fan.

£7.43 / $10 delivered. 500rpm will be enough as long as you don't stick crap on top of your NVR. Fit one of these to it to ohttp://www.amazon.co.uk/SODIAL-Grill-Protector-Finger-Silver/dp/B00HPK8AHS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1443097894&sr=8-2&keywords=120mm+grill

Hi, I'm about to buy a 7608NI-I2 and am concerned about the noise from the fans. Are you able to post a video showing the noise from the stock factory fan?

This is a recording opening the door and walking into my small home office. It's not good for any room you will be spending time in. Hikvision7608
