I've had cameras up for 3 years but they do nothing apart from go red at night. I've tried to get them online but no success tried many times but just can't get them on it doesn't have a built in hdd and I've tried many external hard drives the dvr doesn't recognise. I was speaking to someone in work n they recommended a hikvision dvr he says it's so simple getting online without having to opening ports n all that stuff that I don't have a clue about. Can I use an external hard hardrive on the hikvision or do in need to get a hdd built in to record?

Your question is a little confusing.... You've had cameras up for three years and they don't work apart from the IR lights switch on at night? Why have they been up for three years not working? When you say you have a built in hard drive I'm assuming you mean in your NVR?
Lets start again....
What IP Cameras are you using? Model and Manufacturer?
What NVR are you using? Model and Manufacturer?
How are you connecting the cameras to the NVR? Direct or through POE switch?
Have you tried running a camera direct from a PC to see if they actual work

Once some of these have been answered it will help to assist you with your issues.

I'm out of the house can't check what cameras I have but the dvr recorder is nameless. It was plug n play. The cameras are working in have a 10 inch monitor which I have beside the recorder so I can see through the cameras. They work but I can't record on the dvr. I've tried many times to get them online with step by step guides n still I'm nowhere. I think the dvr I got is rubbish as I said it's not got a name on it. I want to get a new dvr and I was told about the hikvision one that it was easy to get online

Within the recorder there should be some sort of menu system. From there isn't there an option for setting up recordings? Or motion detection? Is this an analogue system we are talking about?
If you can view the cameras on the 10" monitor we can assume all the cameras work they just fail to record. Is the hard drive initialised within your system? If not can you try and initialise it. Without the make and model hard to tell you actually where to look.
If you are looking for a new system do you have the funds to purchase it? NVR and 4 new cameras plus had drive, not going to be cheap. But if you can go for either Dahua or Hikvision setup, same manufacture of NVR and Camera I would personally go for Dahua as they see to have the edge at the moment.

From this picture it looks like the camera is pointing at the soffit. Try pointing the camera down and away from the soffit and wall and see if you still have the problem

try angling the cameras down and away from soffit and walls...if that doesnt work...replace the entire system with a known good brand and 1080p cameras...dont replace junk with junk..
