External Hard Drive? Concealement questions

Hi all,

Pleased to meet such researched/tried and tested people! We're in a 1/2 finished home outside of town at a vulnerable roadside location. I've been pulling my hair out reading up on locations and shoehorning the NVR into a bunch of spots. We've been testing the new $$ Samsung D5401 kit from Costco with eight 4k cameras but it's not likely to fit the bill... I'd like to conceal something smaller and quieter.

Is there a set-up where you've pushed all the data to a hidden external hard drive? Or do I need to shoehorn an NVR/desktop?

And what is the actual ventilation requirement if the NVR (or a HD for that matter) goes into a wall/ceiling cavity?

I've read here that I could buy a quieter NVR from Dahua if I don't bring the cameras directly to it--so I have to ask, can you use 2 switches (front yard/back yard) for this model of NVR?

Thank you!

Electronic equipment needs to be kept in conditioned spaces. Heat is the enemy.
Use cameras with a POE switch. Then you can run the camera wires to the switch, then just run one wire to the NVR making it much easier to hide. Put it in a top of a closet or such.

If you purchase Dahua cameras with SD card slot in them, you can use that as well to record as a backup.

Electrical equipment will need to breath, and there maybe fire hazard issues with installing equipment in wall/ceiling cavities.

Ventilation requirements vary based on particular equipment, usage, ambient temp and humidity.

General rule of thumb, if you are uncomfortable in a location your computer equipment will be also.

That's a good reminder about backup SD cards. Do they work with NVR based systems or just BI?

Should I look at cloud backup even with pidly <6mbps (advertised) rural internet?

During wind storms out here, there is not likely to be anyone available to respond to our house alarm.

The sd card is in the camera and doesnt care where you are sending the video stream.
Cloud back is silly...backup to a hidden network location if you are paranoid...

Exactly, buy one of Google's off-shore server farms in San Fransico's bay, :D

Have an electrical outlet installed in a closet and then run all network cables to there before you close in the walls. Once that is done you can take your time deciding on what hardware you will use.

Thanks all for the input regarding the backups.

It's been a weird year. There's some addicts prowling around who aren't real shy.

I had someone go through my shed... He went through my regular clover seed and later told me all about which seed was "real clover seed" and which was "fake".

This fucker could spend all day looking through my house--if the cops don't pick him up he has nothing better to do.
