I tested out my SD49225T-HN as an LPR. To see if it was possible to read the plates at all, and see if I should buy a camera just for LPR.
Daytime no problem at all.
Nighttime a little trickier to get good focus etc. But after an hour or so it worked nice.
But my real hassle is dusk and dawn, for 30-60 minutes in dusk/dawn neither daytime settings or nighttime settings work…
Anyone with experience have some good advice here. Would be nice to see that I have the possibilities to read plates all day if I invest in a camera for LPR.

Interestingly Dahua's dedicated LPR cameras seem to be mostly Starlights, with the latest ITC237-PU1A-IRHL looking like it has the same sensor as the Ultra Starlights if the specs are correct.

I wonder, shouldn't low gain levels be beneficial for handling variations? From photography, if I push the ISO too high the dynamic range is reduced. In similar ways I would have expected low gain settings to be beneficial for handling large variations between dark and bright.
If you notice those have a metric butt load of IR (25W Bullet!) that can kinda level out the playing field as far as variation is concerned.. andy cant get us those if we dont order a large minimum purchase heh.. the better DSP in the Ultras has better Backlight features too that might be really good for LPR use.

I am getting myself confused here. Why is the HFW5431E-Z $100 more than the HFW5431E-Z5?

@nayr Hate to ping you but do you know why the HFW5431E-Z $100 more than the HFW5431E-Z5? It seems that the Z5 should be more? I was about to order the Z but now I'm leaning towards the Z5.

Thanks!

At a quick glace of their short descriptions I can only see the below differences which might be the reason why there is a cost difference.

IPC-HFW5431E-Z

> 1/3” 4Megapixel progressive scan CMOS
> H.265&H.264 triple-stream encoding
> 25/30fps@4Mp(2688×1520)
> Smart Detection supported
> WDR(120dB), Day/Night(ICR), 3DNR, AWB, AGC, BLC
> Multiple network monitoring: Web viewer, CMS(DSS/PSS) & DMSS
> 2.7mm ~12mm motorized lens
> 2/1 Alarm in/out, 1/1 audio in/out
> Max. IR LEDs Length 50m
> Micro SD memory, IP67, PoE

IPC-HFW5431E-Z5
> 1/3” 4Megapixel progressive scan CMOS
> H.265&H.264 dual-stream encoding
> 25/30fps@4Mp(2688×1520)
> Smart Detection supported
> WDR(120dB), Day/Night(ICR), 3DNR, AWB, AGC, BLC
> Multiple network monitoring: Web viewer, CMS(DSS/PSS) & DMSS
> 7mm ~35mm 5x zoom lens
> 2/1 Alarm in/out, 1/1 audio in/out
> Max. IR LEDs Length 100m
> Micro SD memory, IP67, PoE

Thanks...I did notice the difference but wasn't sure if that actually was $100 of differences. From what I can tell the Z5's lens is also motorized its just different description.

The $100 is probably due to the optics 12mm on the E-Z and 35mm on the Z5. All depends if you need that extra zoom.

Ok thanks now I feel stupid. I just checked and they are indeed only $10 difference. The Z model was listed for $299 up until recently but now its 199.99. I've had it in my wish list and was just about to order for $299 until i saw the Z5 get listed for $190. Sorry for the confusion.
