I just purchased BI and am doing all the fine tuning right now. I have not read up enough on the android app to know what it will take to make it work on my phone. I don't want to buy and find out that my router setup and such won't work. Thanks.

You will need to have a routable external ip...cable, fiber, dsl, will be no problem, satellite, cellular, can be a problem ...you also need to either setup vpn (most secure) or port forward.

I will have to port forward because my AT&T router sucks and vpn is out of the question from what I've read. I have several posts and maybe should have consolidated them even though they are different. Port forwarding on this router is a little tricky. I can view my some cams with Hik-Connect and iVMS-4500. I just got all my Dahua cams and am not as familiar with what I can use for them. I didn't have to port forward anything for the Hikvision cams. fenderman you are pretty nice to always answer. Thanks.

vpn is no out of the question...
you dont have to use the att router put it in bridge mode or upgrade to an att version that allows bridge mode.
never port forward any cameras themselves...you are asking for big trouble...there is no need to if using BI

I can't upgrade to any other router is what they tell me. There is no true bridge mode for the AT&T router after doing a lot of research. They have a DMZ+ mode but I don't know how safe that is compared to a vpn setting. Right now, all I want is to be able to view my cameras and to get some notices if there are any when I am on the road.

dmz is not related to vpn..if you turn on dmz, then plug another router into yours and disable wifi on the att router it will work just fine...you need to start doing research...or roll the dice and port forward.

fenderman, I have been researching for a long time on this. There is not a lot of good info that I find on dmz because most GOOD routers don't use it from what I've seen. Some info says it's not safe is why I hesitate. Have you ever used dmz?

Almost every router and firewall allows dmz, even business units...you are missing the point. You place setup a SECOND router that has a proper firewall and vpn, BEHIND the att router....google your routers model number and bridge mode and see what comes up

I was wondering about Asus. I think I like their GUI. What do you have?
I have various units depending on location and need. Most are business that allow for vlans. I generally use zyxel and now am toying with untangle. For your level that would be too much. Go with the asus...

May I ask fenderman, what is your level? What do you do for a living?
I dont do anything that is technology related. I have installed hundreds of cameras and managed many networks in my lifetime. I can ascertain your level based on your posts that is why I am giving you this specific advice. You would be lost trying to use a business gateway..possibly making things worse by allowing unwanted traffic.

Yeah, I looked at the untangle. WOW. I do learn fast though. Not anything I want to try though. I just started this stuff a short time ago. There is a lot involved in it for sure. Where did you learn to manage networks?

Second that. Very easy to setup VPN.

FYI I had some initial issues with my client pcs losing their previously static IP addresses. Asus called some of my Clients from my previous router setup as initially static which I was good with . Any additional clients could only be assigned as 'manual'. Couldn't find a clear difference in those terms. Then in the middle of the night the router changed IP addresses on many of my PCs including my Plex computer and BI giving me a headache. So I updated with the Merlin-asus firmware ( very easy to update just like native asus firmware) and touch wood it's been stable.

If you setup a static IP, in the devices themselves instead of the router u won't have these issues.
Forgot to add that I did try that for the BI pc using windows network setup and while the PC became static, I had some intermittent network/ internet access. May be it has something to do with the way I left DNS or gateway dynamic etc. In any case In my older tomato USB on asus rt-n 16 router, I setup up static on the router and it was very stable.

By the way when u setup 'manual' IPs on the router, I presume the dhcp should include those IP in the range (e.g. 1. 142 within the dhcp of 1.2 to 1.150)? I have heard when u setup IP on a device itself its recommended to keep it outside the dhcp.
