I'm looking to set up a system at home with up to 4 x 3mp DS-2CD2335FWD-I and am trying to figure out whether I can get away with using an old PC I've got sitting around for Blue Iris.

It's an Ivy Bridge i3-3225 with 8GB RAM so from I understand it should support Intel Quick Sync.

Whilst I understand it's much less powerful than a current i5-6500 machine, can anyone offer any advice as to whether it will be enough for my install? I'd much prefer to spend the extra AUD$500 on something else.

I have that exact processor in my HTPC and run BI with a 2 MP camera. BI itself generates around a 10% CPU load at idle and record. You will probably be okay if nothing else runs on it and you tweak some settings, but you can also just put in an Ivy Core i7 from eBay for probably <$150 if you just need more CPU.

I had an earlier I3 that was running BI and 5 x 3MP @ 15fps and 6Mbs and it handled the load. When I added an additional 3 3mp cameras it started to struggle a little. This was several years back with BI3. In short you should be fine.

Thanks, that provides me a lot of confidence to give it a go. Can start looking for a POE switch now that I don't think I'll go down the NVR path.

I have the same processor but with 16GB Ram - 8 GB would be ample.
I run 1 x webcam; 1 x 1.3MP; 2 x 2MP; 1x 3MP; 1x5MP with BI - 25FPS. Processor runs between 20 - 25% - recording direct to disc.
The PC also runs a weather station and acts as a file server and media center streaming via hdmi to a 4K TV; it also has 4 x sat. tuners recording SD TV with local playback and streaming around our house. All up, it may get to say 40- 50%. A remote access app that I sometimes use will push it up to 70 - 90% but I have not optimized it for lower resolution access.
I have been impressed with its performance.
