Hey guys I am trying to decide whether or not to get the Dahua 5231 turret for monitoring my driveway/front of the house. I know it got some pretty good reviews and the night vision is good but I wanted to ask you before I bought the unit from Andy. Does it seem like a good choice for what I want or should I get the Dahua starlight mini wedge Aliexpress.com : Buy New arrival 2MP Starlight IR Mini Dome Network camera IPC HDBW4231F AS,free DHL shipping from Reliable network camera suppliers on Empire Technology Co., Ltd

I like the mini wedge shape as it will be more inconspicuous but am not sure how the night vision is compared to the 5231. Right now I have an Amcrest indoor 1080P wifi camera installed inside the house in front of the bay window and its doing a decent job. I was also thinking of mounting a 5231 or another dome camera at the right roof line (see picture below).

Another camera I saw was this one which has a higher MP and cheaper price- Aliexpress.com : Buy DAHUA Security IP Camera CCTV 4k 8MP IR Mini Dome Network Camera IP67 IK10 with POE Without Logo IPC HDBW4830E AS free shipping from Reliable ip camera suppliers on Empire Technology Co., Ltd
What do you think about this one?

I have a synology NAS so I was planning on using its surveillance station or buying an NVR..your thoughts on this as well please?

Thanks guys and sorry if my questions sound stupid..i'm still learning!

I use the turret over my garage for the driveway and the mini wedge for my front door. I would stick with the 2mp 5231 as it's well tested and works. The turret will blend in pretty well with that white trim around the garage. Most people won't even notice it.

The right roof line would only be good for an overview shot. Not good for an ID shot. If you do put a camera there I would stick with a turret or bullet with some zoom. I wouldn't put a dome up there.

I use BI so can't comment on NAS or nvr.

No stupid questions only stupid answers.

If you buy 2-4 cameras buy a NVR. Especially the NVR5xxx series. It has extra stuff to use intelligence on board like intrusion, face regnocnition, and more.

I use all the time an NVR.
Big projects i use nvr608-xx4kS2

Hi Anarchist

I really like the mini-dome wedge for the front door, however for the driveway the 5231 will be a much better option as it performs better in low light. ( more IR, varifocal lens, better f stop )

Also as others pointed out, the 2nd story is too high to get good ID images... of course may a nice big starlight PTZ would work well there ... ;-)

Hey sorry I have been away and didnt get to respond back. I had one more question regarding the IR reflection - as you can see from the picture I posted of my garage door, I have a an outdoor light in the middle of the garage door header. Now if I mount the 5231 to the right side (X mark) will I be dealing with a lot of IR reflection?
The outdoor light is on a timer and will go off around 10PM so I am thinking it should be fine but just wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

Thanks guys.

Hi Anarchist,

Looks like a good spot to mount the camera. I am actually a fan right now of extra cameras - so I would mount one on each side of the garage. This gives you a better chance of getting good ID images.

In terms of IR reflection - w the turret version you should be fine as long as the cameras are angled so that the IR does not bounce off of a surface back to the camera.

If you are currently on a tight budget, I would bring cable to both locations, and install a camera today in one, and plan to add another camera to the other later.
