@Apex20 - That would depend on what you're trying to do. The ZE has longer IR range but that's accomplished by "focusing" the IR more tightly, apparently, so it may not illuminate the whole, wide field of view enough under some conditions. It also has shorter and longer zoom options than the Z. The ZE also has a black face which some folks might find a little "obvious" against light colored backgrounds. Usually, not always certainly, a camera like this gets adjusted when installed and left at a specific zoom setting so it really depends on your, specific, situation and requirements.

Might not be exactly what you are comparing to but I have the 5MP hikvision DS-2CD2352-I and even daytime image is better on my 5231R-Z. The 5231R-Z even stays in day mode, color 24/7 and can see the front of my home perfectly fine even with the shadow from the house. The hikvision in the back yard has all the sunlight yet it's meh! ok with sunlight and goes blind at dawn or dusk even with ridiculous 1/3 exposure settings. In night mode, its not able to see 20 feet even with an additional ir flood light. Further than that I can see but for example my dog just looks like a moving bolder. I'm waiting for spring to buy an other 5231 and probably throw out the DS-2CD2352-I. My advice, dont look at MP's to make your choice. Hope this helps.

For those who have installed these cameras, is it true that Dahua international models require the use of their own specific junction box? Apparentky the stuff in the US is not compatible?

Different cameras require different junction boxes, basically none are designed for the electrical boxes you find at the hardware store. This is not some issue specific to the international model.

Yes, but no nightmare. You download the manufacturers compatibility charts and it tells you what is needed.
I ordered my the R-Z and its cheaper cousin (IPC-HDW4231EM) on Tuesday from Andy @EMPIRETECANDY. I live in BFE. It arrived today (two days). Unreal. Unfortunately I made two unbelievable rookie mistakes. One, I ordered the Z instead of the the ZE (ARG!), and didn't specify the focal length on the cheaper EM model... and it came with a 3.6mm. Since I'm using this in a barn, the wider FOV is needed for better coverage. Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the lens (DIY)? I know this isn't the proper thread for the 4231EM, but since it is related to the ZE (if only in image quality), I'm hoping someone here knows...

I'm sure most of us have no clue what or where BFE is.
Do you need the extended Ethernet capabilities of the ZE? if not, there's very little difference otherwise.

The property extends about a 1/2 mile to a cabin that has no power, but has been vandalized in the past. Running cat 6 capable of that kind of distance is intriguing. But realistically, that's a project for another day - so I'm quite content to keep the Z and order another ZE if/when the interested for cabin protection resurfaces.
I've swapped lenses in Hiks and other turrets/bullets in the past, but knowing what the focal length and physical length of the threaded portion of the lens body is, is always a bit of trial and error. If I knew what the compatible specs are for the 2.8 lens, I would have not problem attempting it myself. It's the process of ordering various lenses to find the correct fit that doesn't appeal. Hence, why I was hoping someone had already done the leg work.

There's nothing wrong with the Z vs. the ZE, it's mostly aesthetics.

I was unable to locate this, but is there a newer version of this Dahua international camera model decoding chart? This does not have the "ZE" versions with ePoE. Note, this is different than the version on the US Dahua Wiki: Dahua U.S. models
I will be needing a 4231, 3.6mm, if you are interested in selling.
Thanks @lovedgor - but I was able to repurpose it to an area where 3.6 is acceptable (aimed at mailbox).
