yes to to these questions.

This is the wire mapping that I've followed:

Red molex to black USB
Black molex to white USB
Yello molex to green USB
Don't connect white molex

Have you configured and saved the profile in PuTTY for the settings of baud rate=115,200, 8 bits no parity?
Have you connected the wires correctly? Tx to Rx, Rx to Tx, GND to GND?
How did you figure out which wire is which?

If I remember correctly the TFTP Server application mentioned earlier in this thread didn't work for me. I had to use the Hikvision TFTP server to successfully copy the files over to the NVR and flash.

I'm using the hikvision tftp tool. I just can't open a putty session to the NVR.

Don't connect white molex
I just checked my USB to NVR wiring and it matches this.
But there is no guarantee that the colour assignment is consistent.

Try disconnecting the USB Green (Tx) and connect the USB White (Rx) to the Yellow Molex.

Yay! This works. Everything I needed was in the forum, but I have a bad habit of trying to complicate simple things, so I'll run through my process and some pitfalls.
My machine: Windows 10 64-bit.
Edit: These are my steps for flashing the NVR, not the cameras.

Step 1: Make USB-serial cable using the color scheme above. (RedMolex-BlackUSB | BlackMolex-WhiteUSB | YellowMolex-GreenUSB)
Step 2: Plug USB into computer. My computer recognized "Prolific USB Serial" something with error in device manager. I also got a warning about a USB device trying to draw too much power. I did a google search for "Prolific Serial Fix Windows 10" and found a driver that worked. Unplug USB, Install driver, Plug USB during installation, restart
Step 3: Serial port USB should now be working. NO MORE yellow exclamation icon on the USB serial prolific device thing. USB-serial adapter should be plugged into the small 4pin port on the motherboard of the NVR.
Step 4: Open Putty using the serial configuration mentioned in this post. Mine was on COM4, but apparently this can be different and should show up in device manager.
Step 5: At this point you should have a Putty terminal over Serial connection. If you power on the NVR you should see activity in the terminal (Putty). THIS IS SIMPLY A DISPLAY AND WILL NOT TRANSFER DATA EVEN IF YOU USE CORRECT IP ADDRESSES.
Step 6: Screw everything up. This step is optional. At first I connected an ethernet cable from my laptop to my NVR. I had no idea what the ip address of the NVR was so I booted up a few times and looked for the IP address. I saw something and tried that several times with some promising looking text. Turns out the IP I was using was the host IP for the NVR that all of the cameras are connected through. I tried a manual address on the laptop with random guesses for the NVR. None of this worked. Time to think instead of just doing stupid crap.
Step 6.5: Fail more. Again this step is optional. I looked all over my house for a spare router, switch, etc. to get my laptop and NVR on a separate network from my home. No dice. I gave up and put my NVR on my home network and connected to my home network on my laptop via wireless.
Step 7. Fail + revelation. Now I know my laptop and NVR IP addresses are correct. I still can't get the thing to update. From the terminal, I can interrupt boot with ctrl-U, I can input IP addresses. It says Downloading...T T T T T T T....etc. T stands for "timeout" as far as I can tell and at this point you need to just turn the NVR off and figure something else out.
Step 8. Realize that Putty is just providing a terminal, a monitor, a display. The putty session is not hosting any files even though I put the digicap.cav file in the folder. This is where you need to have a TFTP server running ALONG WITH your putty shell. (ooohhhh......)
Step 9. Start TFTP server. I used the hikvision one that is able to be downloaded from mirrors. I couldn't find it on the hikvision site, but downloaded it elsewhere. Just put the digicap.dav file in the same location as the tftpserv.exe file.
Step 10. Go back to putty shell, power on NVR, press ctrl-U. Put in correct IP addresses, press "y" to confirm, hopefully that worked.

There are probably a few steps missing here. Feel free to keep this thread going with questions.

Arguably a small bug in the U-boot - if it misses the initial handshake it just spins round out of sync, but eventually hits the timeout limit and re-tries, around 2mins if if I remember correctly.

Is there some reason that I can't update through the web interface?

Attempting to update LV-PB932F4 cameras which are on V5.2.0 build 140913

Is there some reason that I can't update through the web interface?
Well, the answer may depend on the specific error you are seeing.
Some possible reasons are:
Firmware version mismatch. Might be for the wrong camera, might be an earlier version and downgrade is inhibited.
Language mismatch. Might be EN firmware on a CN camera or vice versa.
Invalid firmware. Might be modified firmware that fails an integrity check.
Upgrade failed. Might be a problem with the environment, the browser or the OS. This can happen when running a VM.
Path too long. Self explanatory.

Thanks I switched from firefox to IE and the nvr upgraded just fine. I haven't done the cameras but I'm sure the same will be true.

No clue. I just updated my cameras and NVR to the latest releases via their web interfaces from the Hikvision site firmware without any issues.
NVR is at 3.4.3 build 170822 and cameras running V5.4.3 build 160705.

Great info in this thread for the Laview 6 ipcam setup purchased through Newegg (or whereever), a deal that's hard to beat and arguably the best bang for your buck, if still available. I just wanted to supplement allanak's last post, the firmwares he listed are still current as of date of this posting and usated flawlessly for using the tftp method. Only difference I can see between me and allanak is the build # on the NVR, mine reads 160822. Be patient with Cam update mine ran through twice before completion, apprx 3 mins, but I waited 10 mins. just in case it wasn't actually done, you can never be too sure can you, especially with a brick looming in the back of your mind. lol NVR update lost all previous settings, Cam update kept all previous settings, including user name/password. Hope this helps someone out.

My best guess of what my LaView setup actually consists:
Laview NVR LV-N9808C8E (HIKVision DS-7608-E2+8P) x 1
LaView IP/Cams LV-PB932F4 (HIKVision DS-2CD2020-I) x 6

Firmware d/l site US version:
Hikvision USA

Files:
NVR - DS-76xxNI-E1(E2)P_Firmware_v3.4.3_160822
IPC - DS-2CD2x10,2x20,2x14_Firmware_v5.4.3_160705

Thanks for the details shared about LaView set. I am struggling to record basic VCA events on Laview NVR LV-N9808C8E and LV-PB932F4 IPCams set. Do you know if it works with HIKvision firmware? Also LaView LV-PB932F4 cameras have Expert Mode for motion detection that might filter out false alarms, however even Expert Mode trigger is set in camera NVR fails to record motion triggered event from Expert Mode settings/zones. I have LaView V3.4.62 build 160713 in NVR and V5.4.0 build 160811 in Cameras. Please help!

You can see that intrusion detection and line crossing are visible on LV-PB932F4 IpCam snapshot and turn red once triggered, however there is nothing recorded on NVR. LaView support said that VCA is not supported by LV-PB932F4 but I can see it works in camera. My guess is that LaView stripped off VCA functionality from NVR firmware and HIKvision version will work just fine recording VCA events. Please confirm if you are using it with re-flashed NVR.

Reviving this older thread...

New to IP cameras and their setup. Bought the Newegg 'special' a couple of weeks ago with the La View LVN9808C8E NVR (firmware 3.4.82 build 170301), two 4mp LVPB3140WC cameras (firmware 5.4.4 build 170419), and four LVPB912F4C cameras (firmware 5.4.5 build 170309) for $400, which I thought was quite the deal.

I have no current interest in reflashing any of it to HIKvision firmware, although that might change once I get more comfortable with it.

I've configured quite a bit of it, and have read every post in this thread - the one about enabling Virtual Host and then being able to directly configure each camera was particularly helpful.

I have a few questions:

What would I gain by flashing the NVR and cameras to HIKvision firmware?

Has anyone been able to find a way to change some of the OSD parameters like font size or color or display mode? I've only been able to change the date format/camera name and drag those two around the screen - anything else, and the camera reports back "Invalid Parameter!". I find it really annoying that the OSD flashes from black to white and back with background video level changes. Ideally, I'd like a smaller white font inside a solid black rectangle.

And most importantly, I quickly discovered that La View have fallen on their face when it comes to seeing camera images on a browser page. I don't understand how they could let that happen, but apparently it has. There seems to be no way to log into the NVR and see either live images or playback - all that happens is I get "No Plug-in Detected", and a popup saying "Live View Failed!" No kidding.

On the La View support page, there's a blog post for a workaround for Firefox and Chrome, but it assumes I've already had some plugin installed from months or years ago, and it stopped working, with NO info on where to find that plugin if you don't have it. And many reports on the web that the workaround doesn't work quite a bit of the time anyway. I have Forefox, Chrome, IE 11, and Edge, all current, and none of them work. I found something called Webcomponents.exe that supposedly installs the plugin, but running it didn't do anything. So then I installed La View's LaView Client for Windows, and it gets the same plugin missing error message.

I've installed the iVMS-4200 Client, which allows me to see all the cameras and do some configuring, but I can only see the recordings it makes on my computer, nothing that's been recorded on the NVR.

What I really would like is to use the browser login to the NVR and the cameras to see the images and more importantly to see playback of recorded footage without having to be physically at the NVR, which is down in the basement.

It seems there are people here with the same or similar setup. Can you view live images and playback logging into the NVR's IP, and if so, can you please tell me how to do it?

Thanks.

search the forum for "npapi" for the plugin issue.

Thanks. Had a look, and it seems the best current option is the 32 bit version of the Pale Moon browser, which I installed - it works.

I can now see and download recorded footage from the NVR on my computer, which is great.

Another update on updating firmware for the LaView IP/Cams LV-PB932F4 aka (HIKVision DS-2CD2020(D)I). Successfully updated to V5.4.81 build 180203 using FW from first site below:

read pdf for list of supported cams, a quite extensive list

FW 5.4.81-180203
DOWNLOAD PORTAL

On another note, it seems to be getting harder to find the older firmwares that actually work (for me anyway). When searching for a 5.3.0 or 5.4.0, or 5.4.5 FW, the digicam file size is actually twice as big (~26MB+ vs. older files size of ~14MB). These larger file size digicams didn't work for me when flashing the cam's FW . I had 4 LV cams at 5.2.5, I tried flashing 5.3.0, 5.4.0, 5.4.5 for an hour or two, no luck, always came back at 5.25. I thought to myself while scratching my head, man these files sizes seem larger than before. I searched, and in answer to my suspicions, I was correct. I found a 5.3.0 at ~14MB (below), and Voila! successful flash. I then tracked down a smaller sized digicam file for the most recent FW 5.4.81 (found it at link above), and success once again. I also realize during this flashing session that all of my old links no longer work and most of those older sites now offer FW's that seem bloated with something that doubles the file size. If they work for you, great. They didn't for me. (It must be a conspiracy, where's my foil hat? lol) All I'm saying is if you find somethinf that works for you, keep it, because you may not find it again. That goes for firmwares and the TFTP program as well. Best of luck and No Bricks Allowed.

FW 5.3.0_150513
DS-2CD2x10,2x20,2x14 IP Support - Download

Edit: I've updated the HIK IPC number to DS-2CD2020(D)I from the 2CD-DS2022 I had previously. I got the previous number from an alternate thread on the Laview IPC's. I believe these cameras to be the 2020's because of my successful firware updates using 2020 FW's, I have yet to see 2022 as a supported device in the support list of any previous FW I've used...

uodate 9/18: Laview website lists this cam as a FW R2, further corroborating it's a 2CD-DS2020.

Did you update from older Hikvision firmware, or directly from LaView?
Trying to update from LaView but unsuccessful.

I only use HIK firmware, I've yet to try a Laview FW. I believe the current latest version on Laview site is 5.40. I can't speak on those FW's. What I will say is make sure you use the TFTP method to update, it works when other ways fail. To use, make sure IPC is on, then start tftp program, make sure ip address shown in program shows 192.0.0.128, not 127.0.0.1. when ip shows 192.0.0.128, then restart IPC. TFTP should pick up IPC from that point and start the FW update. After update it may reboot IPC and reflash FW again, so make sure you stop the tftp program after it says completed, and never during a flash process. Personally, I let it run through a couple of times before I stop it. Good luck!
