I'm curious what exactly does "support for US ( or any other country) plates) actually programatically?
Will the camera not pick up or snapshot a U.S. plate if it does not "support" U.S. plates or would this just mean it is not able to ad U.S. plates to the database, white-list, etc.?

The DAHUA ANLPR camera I had briefly, for example, did not support U.S. plates. You could drive a car by it and it had no plate capture reaction at all.

Which one did you have?

As I recall this software was pretty impressive however out of my price range for my use with just one camera for residential tracking

All recognition programs compare the resulting frame with the vehicle number with the programmed templates. If there is no suitable template then the program will produce an incorrect result.
I use this software for a year and I can say that the accuracy of the recognition of 95% sometimes the program surprises me very much. In the photo, I myself hardly can read the number of the car and she quite accurately recognized it. :)
I have two cameras connected to the entrance and exit from the territory. If the approaching car is allowed to drive, the gate is automatically opened. If there is no car number in the database, a warning is displayed on the security monitor.
And one more plus of a separate software for recognition from the built-in algorithm to the camera, it is the possibility of using any cameras in not depending on the manufacturer and the price.

OK, so that sounds like no U.S. recognition means cars with U.S. plates could drive by all day and not be noticed or picked up because the frame shape or letter template is not in the software db, doe that sound accurate?

In the U.S. while the plate shape is the same in every state, the plate color, logos, sublimated design patterns are not. They are in every state, and sometimes different colors by vehicle. Letter \ number combinations may vary from just one, up to 8 on a plate depending on state or personalization. It is not consistent. Will this be able to be accounted for in the software?
I'll be interested in trying it out when U.S. plates are added.

Yes. In the absence of a template, he will try to match the number with those that he has and produce an incorrect result or simply ignore it.
The color and additional parameters do not affect the accuracy of the recognition, the shape of the number, the number of digits and letters is important. Here is an example of templates laid down in the program for Russia. Runners can choose how to use when recognizing I turned off those who do not come to me and do not need to recognize them. Yellow - Taxi, Red - Diplomatic, Blue - Police, Black - Military :)

Wow this looks amazing! It's perfect for a new project I am undertaking. I am adding a camera to the only entrance/exit into our neighborhood and will be trying this out.

I am considering the Dahua SD6AL830V-HNI and wanted to enable tracking on it. Does anyone have any experience with this camera and LPR? Do you think the tracking may make it easier or harder for the recognition?

Thank You!

We’re getting blasted by mail thieves. I really need to get plates on these clowns. I was thinking of adding another 5231 cam and trying to zoom it enough to capture cars driving up the road towards our mailbox... would you guys recommend NOT getting that cam for this? I was gonna mount it a ways from the road and use the varifocal to zoom in. Tough to get it positioned well enough for capturing each plate going by. Would need to run 100ft of POE and then there’s nothing to mount it to by the road. Any suggestions ?

If you want to use the tracking function, you will not be able to correctly recognize the numbers. There are certain rules for installing the camera in order to get a good result.

Thank you for the heads up, I may actually add a second camera to that same location. One for tracking and the other for LPR. Is there a general consensus as to what camera is best for this? Or maybe top 3 or top 5?

Thanks! :)

The ITC237-PW1B-IRZ seems pretty promising.
I saw mention of it not being that great with the built in software. Is this still the case?
I really just need 1 camera for LPR and would ideally want to be able to white list certain plates and have it take note of all others for future review if any incidents happen in our neighborhood. I will reach out to Andy for a quote on this one too.

I may end up placing both the ITC237-PW1B-IRZ and the SD6AL830V-HNI in the same location, one for LPR and the other for high detail tracking and identification.

Any thoughts?

A good option. With normal setting in place there will be a good result. :)
