T-Mobile Asus AC1900

I just purchased a T-mobile branded Asus AC1900 router to replace my ~10 year old router and setup a VPN. As I understand it this is the same unit as the Asus just re-branded, should I flash the firmware to standard Asus or Merlin before I even start? My end goal is to have a secure network with VPN Access to my BI PC.

I used the same router for a couple of years, and while you don't have as many settings as the true Asus AC1900, it works fine out of the box as is. I had no problems setting up VPN on this router, exporting the certificate it created, and loading it onto my cell phone. It worked very well without having to flash it to Merlin, Tomato or the stock Asus firmware. There are however, many YouTube Videos available on how to do the flash if you want to go this route. Some get pretty involved.

Can anyone tell me the preferred way to setup the TM-AC1900 behind my U-verse Gateway? Currently I have the Uverse Router (192.168.1.254) --> Asus Router (192.168.29.1) -->POE Switch. Should I change the Asus router to the 192.168.1.x? Everything works currently but wanted to ensure I am setting it up to maximize performance.
