Hi,
I recently bought a Sannce CCTV system for my father-in-law and I was hoping someone could give me some advise on keeping it safe online?

The NVR model is N48TP.

I've tried talking to Sannce support about my security concerns but they seem to think it's fine.

Any thoughts please?

Thanks

Don't forward ports to it. Hide it behind a VPN. Ideally, don't even allow it to have outbound Internet access. This applies to all NVR's, cameras, and IOT in general to the extent possible while still maintaining functionality.

It is not fine. For the future, sannce is bottom barrel garbage. Return if you still can.
as noted, you must use a vpn.

Hi,
Unfortunately it needs to be accessable from the internet as that was partly the reason we bought it, it's so family can keep an eye on him as he lives alone and isn't very well.
I mainly went with Sannce because of price, I assumed a certain level of security was a standard.
As for VPN, sadly his router doesn't support that.

Thanks

It has been proven over and over that the manufacturers of these products rarely give a crap about network security, if they even understand it to begin with. You can buy a router with VPN support.

Dig out or buy an old router you can flash an open source firmware onto. Most support OpenVPN... which is free. My recent set-up comprises:

Netgear WNDR3800 - $20 to $50
Gargoyle Firmware - Free
No-IP - Free
OpenVPN for Android - Free
Viewer app - Free

I can see the cameras via a secure connection from my mobile phone. The cameras can not access, or be accessed, by the internet.

Unfortunately because everyone's equipment varies it's hard to do an exact write-up. However between here and the relevant forums/FAQ for each element the information is there.

Cheers, Steve

Welcome Ninko,

Yes, "a certain level of security was a standard": and that standard is NOT SECURE.

Yes, I am serious.

The cheaper kits are far worse than you can imagine.
