Building a new house. Framing is about done and I want to get a plan together on how best to power the IR illuminators I want to install for each area. Since pulling cables is easy at this point, what would be the best solution? My initial thought is to locate the illuminator in a different location from where the camera is mounted. Is that best or should they be mounted together?

Thanks!

Consider running power for outdoor lighting, that way you get enough light to run in color.
So your suggesting just standard flood lights that are dusk to dawn and leave the cameras in daytime mode?

Yes, They dont have to be standard flood you can install something nicer. Include a switch to power on/of so you can install a smart switch that will calculate sunrise sunset. Those dusk dawn sensors on the lights themselves all eventually die.

Thanks @fenderman... when you say nicer, what do you mean exactly? Can you provide a link to something so I can see what you're referring to? I like the smart swit h idea! The only reservation I have about using floods is that they may provide light into the bedroom windows at night. My wife needs it pitch black.

Any outdoor fixture you like, as it's controlled by the switch.. you can put powerdul bulb in then adjust using the dimmer function of the switch if need be....
Another option is something like this
LIFX + BR30

Blackout shades work wonders if you dont already have them.

This is probably going to be the way I need to go. My wife is opposed to having the flood or landscape lights on all night long in consideration for the neighbors. With the light you provided a link for, can the IR illuminator be controlled separately from the flood light? If not, I'm going to need to find the best way to use IR illuminators and the best camera for night vision that is also capable during the day.

Does this bulb provide enough light compared to a traditional flood light?
Yes, 1100 lm - pretty equivalent to normal flood bulbs. (Or 100 w incandescent if you prefer to think of it the old fashioned way )

Do you a recommendation for a good illuminator powered by ethernet POE. Really appreciate the help.
Any illuminator can be powered via Ethernet...see illuninator threads

Okay, I misunderstood your reply. I thought you meant an illuminator powered via ethernet POE without the use of inline splitters/adapters.

Just do your research on the Poe switch so you have the correct power budget for lights and cameras

Power over Ethernet
  • 802.3af (PoE) 15.4 W per port
  • 802.3at (PoE+) 30 W per port
  • Maximum PoE output: 124 W
  • PoE available simultaneously on all ports
  • Intelligent PoE power allocation based on device advertisement (LLDP)

See the cliff notes in the wiki I wrote up some information on IR illuminators and specifically some POE powered versions
