How old? I've been into computers about as long as Microsoft. Before Windows. I thought Visual Basic 6, Microsoft Access and Windows XP were the best things Microsoft ever did and wish 2 of the 3 weren't dead. That old, and I wasn't young when I started.

I've done a little bit of everything in desktop and small-business systems and I also know a thing or two about construction and other areas. I'm very much a do-it-yourself person. A couple of years ago I crawled though some miserable spaces to run coax for the DVR system I put together from an assortment of old stuff. I'm ready to replace it all.

I'm not asking for advice about that right now - this is an introduction. I'm still in research mode. I've read the Cliff Notes and know where to find the Wiki. When I have a better idea what I need to know, I'll post some questions. This looks like a great place to get answers from people who know what they're talking about.

Hello, welcome to the forum. There are plenty of other "old guys" here. I guess I qualify even though I don't feel old.

I'll be 80 in August. Can anybody beat that?....
You don't have me by much. Too old to work in some of the places I have to work in.

...We’re are never to old to learn
No, but we're old enough to have learned some things that a lot of younger people should know.

"I don't know everything, but I know more than anybody younger than I am." That's my quote but you are all welcome to use it.

I'd be the first to admit that a lot of younger people know things I don't know but there are other areas where I've got them by a mile.

Welcome to the forum @Aruth01, there is a lot of good information here. And when you are ready to jump in don’t forget to give a shout out to Andy for equipment. Andy is @EMPIRETECANDY.

If you don't want to craw through those miserable spaces again, you may want to consider HDCVI cameras which let you send a better video signal over coax than old analog cameras. There are hybrid DVRs that combine HDCVI support with support for IP cameras.
