What is the currently recommended camera for License plate recognition? This will be used for identification of vehicles discarding/dumping unwanted items at the end of a driveway of a business ( most likely at night). Needs to have onboard storage as it will not need an NVR.

I use one of the cameras above that Andy mentions. Works fine however there is no LPR software in it. You record this back to an NVR and can playback to view/read plates.

The camera I referenced has LPR algorithm software/whitelist capabilities built into it. Different beast.

40' shouldn't be too hard, you'll need to watch your horizontal and vertical angles between the camera and plate. The open alpr documentation has some good advice.

I'm not certain, but I thought in another thread it was mentioned that the ANPR don't work very well with US plates.
I cant be certain but I thought in that thread the problem with reading US plates was another 3rd party software a gentleman was touting...... saw a YT video by our own @Korgoth where he mentioned the Dahua software could recognize EU/US and Asia plates...?

I tested it only using some plates form Google. Never live. Camera has US, EU and Asia licence plate database so it should work fine. Jus take sure you stick with ITC237 model ;)

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions!

Dahua IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E LPR Talk
watch this link, maybe can help you .
This looks perfect for the application. As I do not need built-in plate tracking.

How much do you sell these for? and would you recommend a second wider angle camera mounted next to or above it to capture more of what is going on, or do you think this one camera would be good by itself?

This camera is has narrow lens, and winder lens, can check the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE. I contact you via PM for the further query.

Generally, a camera used for ALPR at night will be set to a high shutter speed so the plates aren't just a white rectangle. This leaves the rest of the image very dark, so yes an overview camera is a good idea.
