OK, I've spent many hours reading the Cliff Notes and many forum posts here.

I'm planning to start with a small build with just 2 cameras covering the front door of my house. Later I will add other cameras to cover the rest of the exterior. It's a relatively small house, so most likely won't go beyond 8 cameras.

So here's my initial shopping list, hopefully this should
  • 2x Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-ZE Varifocal Starlight Turret $278
  • 2x DAHUA Junction Box pfa137 $17.80
  • i5-6500 desktop (ebay) ~ $300
  • WD Purple 6TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 128MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD60PURZ $189.00
  • TP-Link TL-SG1016PE 16-Port Gigabit Easy Smart PoE Switch with 8-Port PoE+ $139
  • Blue Iris $48
  • Blue Iris mobile app (x2) $20
  • VIVO Full Copper 500 ft Cat6 Ethernet Cable/Wire 500ft Cat-6 Waterproof Outdoor/Direct Burial/Underground (CABLE-V014) $79.95
  • ITBEBE Gold-Plated Pass Through RJ45 Cat6 3-Prong Connectors and Cable Strain Relief 50/50 Kit $24.99
TOTAL $1,097

I'm buying Outdoor Cat6, mostly because I will likely end up stringing some of the cables across the flat roof. I'm in Southern California, so not really worried about the rain but more the continuous UV exposure. I will also explore other routing options, but I'll probably take that as my

Any thoughts or concerns on the choices I've made here, or anything major that I've missed in order to get started?

Don't purchase BI anywhere but on the BI website.
I would run the Ethernet in conduit painted white for the sections running across the roof.

As far as the Blue Iris mobile app goes if both phones are the same either Apple or Android you can likely use family sharing to only have to buy one license for both. If however you have one of each then it will cost $10 for each platform.
