This is a bit of a security and home-automation question.

Has anyone homebrewed anything to grab an electronic signature (wifi/bluetooth macs) of mobile devices coming upto their homes ?

Think like Licence Plate Recognition but for people.

While it could be used for presence detection to turn on my lights etc the real reason is because masked criminals tried to break into the house across the road from me. Theres a 99% chance they would have had their phones on and in their pockets so it would have been nice to have got some more info on them. Sure theres no fool proof way to map a mac address back to an individual but it doesn't hurt to have it, and could be an interesting little project.

I played around with this idea a few years ago on a raspberry pi. It isn't as effective today as it was a few years ago thanks to some android and iOS updates.
You used to be able to find the home addresses of many people who came in range.
