CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Cedar Rapids Police Department wants homeowners with private surveillance cameras to register them with the police department with hopes of reducing crime.

Police said the footage has helped to solve and prosecute crimes in the past.

"This new voluntary registration program allows citizens to be proactive in their neighborhoods," police said in a press release.

It would have been nice to have this sort of information when my snowmobile was stolen a few months ago.

Might be a camera out there that shows the vehicle that pulled off with trailer and all.

I did not have cameras at the time. That has changed.

Where I live in Colorado they run a similar opt-in registry, so they can locate people nearby a potential crime (or escape route) in case they could get useful video.

So far the only time they have reached out was for a missing person case (I feel like they didn't have much and were casting a wide net). The only sad part was they sent it TO everyone's private email when sending the notice out, so now every other person in the voluntary registry has every one else's email address.

I am not aware of anything like that in my area. However the police are aware of my surveillance system and have come by looking for video.

Ooh, BI software owner could sue for trademark infringement, (if they trademarked the name)....or work with them to leverage and market the software. Depends if you are a half empty or half full type. :)
Guess it depends who was in first. How long has BI software been going?

Local law enforcement here uses Facebook to ask for help in cases as the crackheads burglarize homes, garages, businesses daily. They often post surveillance stills for help identifying but sadly the stores have poor camera placement and resolution.
