I wanted to see if I could swap out a 6-22mm 2mp varifocal motorized lens for the the 2.7-13.5mm stock lens in a HDW2231R-ZS 2mp...and I would have but the good folks at Yumiki 2019 Store from aliexpress.com decided that I should have a 6-22mm 5mp lens instead:( Not cool but I still wanted to see if I could swap it out successfully.

It worked! With the above said, I can't recommend the 5mp lens for nighttime/low light use - no footage from the evening time but see daytime footage in below hyperlink.

In the middle of Missouri. I don't know if the lens would be the same but I could open it up and take a picture....

I'm also interested in a longer throw for the 2231. I would think that a lens rated for higher (5) MP would work as well or better than one rated for 2MP.
Obviously, the narrower FoV of a longer lens will have less light to work with, so low-light capability at the long end of the range will be less,
but SHOULD be about the same in the overlap range (from 6-13.5mm).

Also, the cam's IR was tuned for a max of 13.5mm spread.
may need a narrow-angle illuminator to make up for that...

would love to see some night shots (showing diff from 13.5mm out to 22mm) if/when you can... thanx.

I am not am expert....at all...with that said, my understanding is regardless of the distance (in low light) 5mp would be equally as bad, although perhaps someone can correct and enlighten:) And yes the lens work with IR.

The 2.8-12mm lens I have has an f stop of 1.4 and the 6-22mm lens has an f stop of 1.6 so there is a little difference in the amount of light they need. Not an expert but you could google it... Just a thought, if you are looking at something far enough away that you need a 22mm lens, chances are the IR lights will be little to no use at all...

This thread is for changing a lens, not changing a sensor. True, a 5Mp sensor won't be as good in low light as a 2Mp sensor.
Swapping the lens won't change the sensor. (unless I'm missing something)

True dat, especially since the Ir illumination pattern is wider to see things with the wider FOV lens! But the Ir illumination on lotsa cams have a "hot spot" in the middle of the Ir illumination pattern. So maybe, just maybe, the Ir illumination when looking further into the distance will be okay. And if not, an external Ir illuminator could help.
Check this from highly-regarded @nayr: IR Cannon w/Adjustable Focus

The LENS rating of 2mp or 5mp is really just marketing, i think. as long as it has the right focal length to get an image focused onto your sensor, and that image is big enough to fill the sensor, it should work. I'm guessing a lens rated for higher MP may have less optical distortion in order to not look like crap with hi-rez sensors, but i'm pretty sure there's no problem using a lens rated for 5MP on a 2MP sensor as long as it fits and focuses OK...

Huh, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you. I didn't really test it much in low light conditions - I thought I would get the same results as 5mp sensor. I'll post some footage later this evening....

Very Cool! Thanks for the video, another Rainy day project that I will most likely never get too.

I recorded some low light video in the same setting (as the daytime footage) - time stamp is correct. I didn't realize I didn't capture my 'camera device' clicks when I clicked on the Camera button in SmartPSS, so the different settings in the order of the video are:
1) SmartIR (on)
2) Manual IR on at 10%
3) IR Off
4) Manual IR on at 1%
The camera with the new lens seemed to struggle with focusing quite a bit more (you can see when I decide to Auto Focus), especially when I turned down IR, but otherwise, once I figured out that my previous assessment was due to IR reflection (back at the camera) I was much more impressed with the low light results. Also, the night skyline was a bit on the lighter side this evening.

thanx for the videos. does not discourage me from trying this ;-)

btw, if you wanted to read that license plate, you'd turn down the gain...

@dfhawk, i recieved my 8-22mm vf lens and will try to to reproduce your results. the video you posted showed some re-arrangement of the cables on the connector, and i had no audio, so not sure if you explained that part. did you just match the color coding for the lens you removed? thanx.
