to make it short: For me it does not detect anything. Seems to be a blind AI ;).

btw: I even though ( pah crazy...) that this person detection feature would be included in the BI license price. Well I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles...

So what is your experience with Sentry person detection functionality?
What about false-alerts?
Are you happy with the this new addon feature?

It's been out for a day... There's an entire other thread where it was tested with high accuracy by users before it was integrated fully...There's obviously a glitch that needs to be worked out.

Can this be done? I mean does blue iris have handle of its video stream and alert api open so my own AI code can be hooked to intercept the trigger? It's not the extra fee but the privacy of sending data to sentry's cloud that's bothering. Besides the detection AI is no longer a rocket science these days plenty on github.
anything can be done. It will require more processing power and the owner of the intellectual property to allow it.
Reliable AI that does not violate patents is rocket science and is not available on github.

Hi All,

Welcome to the Sentry forum. Let me start by explaining the first step in our BI integration.

This feature is enabled on the Trigger tab in camera properties. You have to enable the feature on a per camera basis.

When enabled, the camera will still record when triggered. If humans are detected in the clip associated with the trigger, Sentry adds icons to the clip list as seen below:

The clips are marked with two icons. The Sentry logo marks a clip where human activity was first detected. If Sentry determines the alert is a continuation of a previous alert, you will see an "occupied" logo (a person) appear instead. For example, if the kids are playing in the front lawn, Sentry will mark the first alert with the Sentry logo. However, Sentry may identify subsequent motion alerts from BI as a continuation of the first alert (where kids were playing) and therefore mark this activity with the red human icon.

If you have SMS and/or email alerts set up for Sentry cameras... then you will now ONLY receive alerts associated with clips with the Sentry logo, i.e. new human activity events. Internally, our mantra is "Stop the nonsense". We hope to reduce false alerts and deliver meaningful alerts. Hope we improve your day by delivering alerts that matter.

All for now. More to come. Feedback welcome! :)

We had a glitch last night, 2019-Mar-14, causing ResourceNotFoundException in the BI logs. That has been resolved today. Sorry for inconvenience.

Privacy is a very serious topic at Sentry. All images are encrypted from the moment they are sent by Blue Iris. Employees cannot access any images without customer consent. Period. We hope to take privacy to the next level in our roadmap by providing an on-prem / hybrid solution as well. If you have other privacy concerns, I am happy to answer.

What patent? writing code based on AI paper or run those code from github? It may not be the state of art, but I'd like to try my luck. Let's see, it's between false alarm due to lights/wind or faulty AI, it can't be any worse. The only question is if blue iris made it possible to do something like that. I hate to have to do it outside of blue iris, which is almost perfect for what it does except there are alot of things can be done with the NVR, why limit itself. Who knows, people may be able to sell (or freeware) add on for blue iris, call it blue iris app etc, like those for web browsers. The sky is limit.
Either could be a violation if the method is patented. There are many patents out there.
If you'd like to try your luck write your own code or buy a vms that claims it can do AI. If you think that you have better ideas than the developer himself, let him know.

How is sentry actually working? In the end the live stream or maybe one image per second must be sent to the Sentry servers. Or does local code "preselect" what is sent for deeper analysis to Sentry servers?

I enabled the trial on 13 of my cams. I walked out and created motion on 7 of the cams. All but one created a Sentry alert (with icon) so I tweaked motion settings, tried again and it labeled the alert with a Sentry icon. At this point I only use push notifications rather than sms or email so I haven't tested that portion. While waiting for a future release to integrate push notifications, I'll setup sms so I know an alert will mean a person is present....a nice relief on a day with pesky clouds.

I have audible alerts setup for motion detection while I'm home so when there's an alert I can hear the computer. I also hear the false alerts of course even when Sentry doesn't detect a human. Just thinking out loud, but perhaps an alternative to the graphic in bqz's post above, an option to only sound with Sentry alerts might be a good idea.

Just turned this on for a few of my cameras to trial it. Is there a way we can help by sending a clip or something to improve it? I just went out to walk the dogs and only had alerts on 1 camera vs the 3 that usually email me when I walk by.

As I've seen posted before, night vision filtering for Sentry needs some work...many motion triggers by humans in a close range dark environment with IR are not identified by Sentry.

Edit: Some alerts are identified by Sentry, but only if the human subject is facing the camera....at least in my FOV.

Set my PTZ to record the community mail box all day and out of 27 alerts with visible people there were 11 that failed to register with the sentry icon. Included the fails below. It would be cool if we could get a filter in the clips section to show only sentry alerts.

That's a great test environment!

An interesting option would be to upload only partial image (similar to Blue Iris Area of Interest), but retaining the full camera view in Blue Iris. For example, I'm not interested in people walking on the right side of the camera's image frame, as it should trigger a false detection and I think that sending the whole image to Sentry would be approved as people appearing in the image, when it should be rejected by the whole system. Sure it will help a lot if BI just uploads an AOI to Sentry. Uploading only the AOI should help in those situations, like a filter, only analyzing the part of the image that we are interested on. In other Words, we should have the possibility to mark a "new zone" (A to F + H currently exist in BI, for example a new zone "S" for Sentry, that should be used only to analyse). There is also a benefit , data saving, as less data would be transferred to AI Sentry, optimizing also response .

Thank you.
