Hi - my NVR was set up by someone else and it works great over the network to monitor my 4 cameras.

Today I tried adding a monitor via the NVR's HDMI port. It's a small monitor, native resolution 1920x1080. I used the cable that came with the monitor, which has a mini HDMI port to plug into the monitor. The NVR's configuration tab (via a browser) says the "VGA/HDMI Resolution" is 1920*1080/60HZ(1080P). The monitor works fine when I tested it by plugging the same HDMI cable into a computer.

When I reboot the NVR, the monitor displays the Hikvision logo for several seconds, then goes black. Same behaviour if I reboot with the network cable unplugged and/or all the camera cables unplugged.

The user manual has a troubleshooting item that seems relevant (see below). However its resolution is via the local menu, which I can't access!

What should I do to get a monitor working?
--------------
No Monitor connected with the NVR locally and when you manage the IP camera to connect with the device by web browser remotely, of which the status displays as Connected. And then you connect the device with the monitor via VGA or HDMI interface and reboot the device, there is a black screen with the mouse cursor.

Possible Reasons:
After connecting the IP camera to the NVR, the image is output via the main spot interface by default.

Step 1 Enable the output channel.
Step 2 Select “Menu > Configuration > Live View > View”, and select video output interface in the drop-down list and configure the window you want to view.

Note:
- The view settings can only be configured by the local operation of NVR.
- Different camera orders and window-division modes can be set for different output interfaces separately, and digits like "D1" and "D2" stands for the channel number, and "X" means the selected window has no image output.

Inaccurate statement.

Log into the NVR web GUI and under System Settings | Menu Output adjust the VGA/HDMI output settings until you find one that is compatible with the monitor.

Thanks for the tip. I changed resolutions and rebooted but got the same result for each option: 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1920x1080, 4K(3840x2160).

Inaccurate statement.
Everything in my post above between the dashed lines s a direct quote from the manual. But I agree it looks inaccurate.

Anyone have any other ideas to get it working?

Yes, the comment was not aimed at you, hopefully you didn't take it that way, it was clear you were quoting something like a user manual.

Ok I found a solution - don't know why it works though! I've put one end of a thin, short piece of wire into the top, right-hand hole of the VGA output on the NVR, and bent the wire so its other end sticks in one of the screw-holes used to tighten the plug on the end of the VGA cable. No VGA cable, no plug, just a piece of wire as a DIY jumper lead. Now my HDMI monitor works!

Here's how I came to this solution.
- Borrowed an old VGA monitor: yes this VGA monitor works with the NVR.
- Plugged in the new monitor via HDMI: Yes it works too now!
- Turned off the VGA monitor at the wall socket: HDMI monitor went blank.
- VGA monitor on standby power: HDMI monitor works.
- Unplug the VGA cable: HDMI monitor went blank.
- Run a piece of wire over the VGA plug pins on the cable: HDMI monitor works when the top-right pin is connected to the plug body.
- Remove the VGA cable and put in the DIY jumper lead as described above.
