Anyone using APC PowerChute or is there a better alternative?

My UPS is a APC Pro1500 GI and I see that PowerChute is APC software that will manage a timely shutdown of my PC before the battery is totally exhausted. But when I read the reviews there appear to be more bad comments than good, so I’m wondering if anyone has any specific feedback on it? There are two versions (personal and business) and it was the personal software suite where I saw the bad reviews. All kinds of comments from it not downloading properly, to it taking over windows 10 settings and it generally falling short of what it should do.

My PC is a HP Elitedesk 800 G4 i5 8500, with windows 10 and BI. Listing this just on the off chance someone has a better way to manage the shut down, which happens occasionally as a result of an extended power outage. I would prefer to manage things within windows 10 and BI if possible and not introduce a third software.

First you should be using a pure sinewave ups with that pc because of Its active pfc power supply.
Second don't use any software to shutdown otherwise it won't turn back on when the power returns.

Thanks Fenderman. I will have a look at the sinewave UPS and read up on the pfc power supply.

On the second part I have misunderstood as I was thinking the bios power setting would take care of the restart but I am obviously wrong. You know much more on this that me - no question there.

So is it an issue that it will just abruptly shut down when the UPS backup runs out and do I need to worry too much about this. I know it is on older PC’s. I would estimate that the system will go down at least once a week in the rainy season here which lasts anywhere from 2 - 3 months.

My end goal is to go solar but that’s a year or so off.

It will not be an issue.

The BIOS feature works if power to the PC is lost while the PC is running.

PowerChute does a normal Windows shutdown before the power is lost with the hope that the PC will not be running when the battery dies and the power is lost.

Thanks aristobrat. That’s a very clear explanation. I understand the diff now.

So I will stick with the current bios settings that I have which allows for restart on power loss.

At the moment I’m testing all this in my lounge room before I install it remotely.

Appreciate the help from you and Fenderman.
