Hi guys,

I'm looking for a small camera that can be encased inside a pillar outdoors. It needs to be looking at a 45-degree angle horizontally, so I assume the lens must stick out of the wall to some extent. For aesthetic reasons, the least it shows, the better.

I was thinking of something like a little dome camera that can be installed with the body inside and just the round plastic cover visible, but I couldn't find any so far.

It's just for residential security to cover a blind spot and doesn't need very high standards. It's just to verify that nobody is lurking behind a corner.

Can you make any suggestions?

Welcome @caudingo

I was looking for something similar and the best option I found was the camera that @VorlonFrog noted above.

It's a nice camera, especially if you have enough ambient light to keep it in color mode.

Can you rotate the lens on this one, @VorlonFrog and for mounting did you use a box ?
I have one of these, but it's not mounted (yet.) It has a metal base plate that screw-mounts directly onto a flat surface, then the camera latches onto the base plate for a snug-to-surface fit. The lens CAN be rotated several degrees in most directions, and the degrees rotation are molded into the black plastic camera body. For a closer look at what's under the hood, review this thread about the dual-cam version of this:

Thanks @VorlonFrog

I like that one for the door too but the direct sunlight has me worried. I was thinking maybe a Ring or Nest or cheapo since it will be right up front too.
But still considering it. The dual one looks funny to me but must have great functionality.
Thanks for the tips.

Do you know if it matters if a product is EOLd in terms of support, firmware etc? I have a few 2231s which I ordered and plan to install this week sometime....- do these need to be firmware updated regularly?

If you ordered from Andy, the cameras will have the absolutely latest version of Dahua firmware available. As for the EOL status, it mostly means no more will be available as stocks dwindle, but little else. Dahua's firmware has been incredibly stable and full-featured for me over the last three years. Andy also has direct contact with Dahua for firmware bugs, so feel confident in sending him an e-mail if you identify and confirm what you believe is a bug.

Thanks - that's helpful. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to go looking for firmware - kind of nervous putting these up but also hopeful things will make a lot more sense once I see it up and running.

I was thinking more of something like the Axis M3016 or the Vivotek FE8121, but they aren't for outdoors apparently. The important part is to minimize the visible part, as the owner is very strict on looks.

Hi caudingo

There is a fantastic thread on the camera recommended by @vorlornfrog and @mat200

If you haven't already seen it here it is:

Front door ID camera IPC-HDBW4231F?

Andy's amazon listing has a review you can read as well

https://www.amazon.com/EmpireTech-IPC-HDBW4231F-AS-Starlight-Network-English/dp/B07BBJQ4B5

I saw your links - I see what you're looking for. I'm only familiar with the Dahua range at this point Courtesy of @EMPIRETECANDY and also (like @mat200) was looking for something less conspicuous .

Look at the thread above though and see if it helps your decision.

Alan
