How to program B.I. to overwrite clip and archiving?

Been working with Blue Iris for about 7 months. One of the things I’m having trouble with is: How do you have BI the over write on the Hard Drive.

I’ve reviewed the tutorial, but still have not learned how to overwrite the old recordings. I’m constantly tinkering with the program. Usually will delete the old before it runs out.

Thanks again for all the help from this forum.

I’ve just set the max size for the New folder to 10% less the available formatted space and set all clips to go directly there. I don’t use the New to move to Stored options as the moving to me is pretty pointless as uses quite a lot of resources to do this.

It is my understanding that file moves on the same drive are not resource intensive and are in fact nearly instantaneous because file’s data is not moved, rather only the two directory structures (table of contents) are modified to reflect the change.

That’s true if you do a move but a copy will still take time and resources.

I think it would help if you told us what you want to achieve and screenshots of your current settings?

True. But this should be a concern only if the 'Stored' folder is on a different drive/partition than the 'New' folder.

I currently use a single Purple drive and I do use the 'Move' option. Out of curiosity, I just ran dupe scan of my 'New' folder and 'Stored' folder (over 1000 entries) and it found no duplicates <dupeGuru>.

BTW, I just noticed my 'Stored' folder is actually named 'Storage'. I don't remember changing the default name. Is this the case for you as well?

Mine is the default and it is the same - Stored is really Storage

Ok from my view point I really can’t see the point of moving things around on the same drive unless someone would care to enlighten me? If you were moving to say a NAS or some other offline to the BI server storage then I can understand why you would want to do this.

Me I just use New, allocate total space - 10% and let BI take care of deleting older clips as the drive fills up.

You see the red bars in the button. Than indicates that you have incorrectly allocated space.

You can not move files back into the same folder than came from. they must move to another folder or must be deleted.

provide infor requested if you still need help

Makes sense... I've changed my setup.

I'm also starting a new experiment... I'm going to try using a much smaller unmonitored 'Stored' folder for the single purpose of holding a copy of my protected clips. I've been frustrated with having clips I've protected mysteriously disappear despite the Help stating that 'A clip may be protected from automatic storage or deletion by right-clicking it and selecting Protect.' My plan is to right-click on the clip after protecting by selecting 'Move>Copy only to...' to my 'Stored' folder. That way I can monitor my protected clips in the 'New' folder for unexpected disappearances while having some confidence I will not lose the clip... (BTW, when I do this and 'Repair/Regenerate' the Database, both copies of the protected clip appears in the clips list. You can see which is which by right-clicking on the clip and select 'open containing folder...').
