Big thanks to @EMPIRETECANDY
My latest new additions arrived safe and sound. This time I thought I'd try the black puppies.

Pleasantly surprised they are dranded with the dahua logo as well. (Not that it makes a difference).

Just need to find time to get them mounted and sort a new network rack out.

Nice, any reason why you didn’t wait for the 4mp variant that is upcoming and also has starlight?

I've been looking and waiting for a while.
And to be honest these cameras as it stands right now are for me and a lot of other people the best low light performers.

The other thing you have to remember is technology moves so quickly if you wait for the next camera you may as well as wait for the one after.

My other issue is I've had some trouble with low life drug addicts around my property using it to take drugs and I've got kids that use the area. So I kind of need them now as well.

Completely understandable. I’m still in doubt if I should go for a starlight camera or another one with a bit more megapixels. I guess it depends on several aspects like if there is some kind of light source (streetlight) or total darkness.

Would be great if this somehow could be tested. I asked a company that normally installs cameras to asses this at my place.

I've got enough streetlight outside mine on the front to keep the 2mp starlights in colour without much fuss or image compromise.

So I'm watching with interest on the 4k stuff.

Should be interesting.

Theres a new hikvision darkfighter x ptz camera come out which is 4k and from the sample shots from hikvision looks epic.

But it's also got a epoc price tag as well.

So I can only see things moving quite quickly in that direction

Security cameras are not (yet?) a hobby of mine which means my girlfriend also has a say in the budget.

Which comes down to buying a decent setup that should last for at least the upcoming 5-10 years. So I don’t have the luxury to start with something simple and upgrade after one or two years.

Starlight 4K would be great but at this point in time I guess those will cost a lot of money. Budget around $1000-1500 for 4 cameras

If you share a bank account with your girlfriend she also has a say in how much can be spend on a camera. Doesn’t sound strange to me.

These cameras will be old relics in 5 years. You can buy 4 cameras for 400-600 bux total. Then in 3-4 years upgrade if needed.

Most of these companies and the folks who work for them know jack shit. They will tell you anything sell you a product. Even if you have a ton of light, there is a significant benefit to these low light cams.

you either need a camera or you dont. if you need a camera you dont wait months for something better. Murphy's law will bite you in the ass.
Exactly, you’ll wait forever for the new Startlight 2+ that can see a fly in total darkness at a mile out. Bigger better faster and cheaper. Planned obsolescence.

That's exactly what I was saying.

You get the best you can reasonably afford at the time.
for me the 2mp starlights are the best around right now.
As @fenderman and @ThomasPI is saying above, it's not necessarily how many mega pixels. More is not always better.

Likewise I ordered the black version. It looks really cool and discreet- why do most cameras have a white finish? Anyway, I am totally amazed by the night vision. It is so much better than 2mp version I bought a couple of years ago.

Which model did you buy before?
