Is the 5231 still TopDog?

Just more than a year ago I bought a couple of updated 5231 models where everyone seem to rave obout the low light capability and that 1080p was the way to go for these turrets. So, has the lineup changed in the last 9 months or so? Does the 2mp 5231 have some competition from a 4K camera yet? Anything else compelling?

Thanks,

Rob

Yes, and if only there was a place where the Dahua lineup was identified that’s not 2-3 years old and where I don’t have to read 1000 pages and hire a consultant to answer, “what’s new”. From what I can tell from two hours of reading the 5231 is still superior at night that it has no equal. My question is simple...

At the moment the 5231 is still at the top of the tree

The new 4mp starlight+ That's come out has potential to take over the mantle but the initial samples posted on the review are telling me just to wait a little bit as it seems to have some ghosting and artefact issues,
Whether that's a fw related thing or not remains to be seen.

Also the 4mp cam does not currently have smart IR which just seems odd to me

And no VF Turret option, allegedly a bullet will be out though.

The new 4MP Startlight+ models may eventually unseat the 5231, but it looks like they're going to need some refinement before they do. And there isn't yet an exact replacement for the 5231 that has best in class low light performance + IR + varifocal, in the 4MP Startlight+ series. So, bottom line: Looks like the answer to the question in your subject line is currently "Yes."

If I were Dahua and wanted to sell a metric crap-ton of cameras, I'd take the exact form factor of the 5231 and put the 4MP Startlight+ technology in it. I expect 5231 users anxious for the latest and greatest would gobble them up faster than Dahua could manufacture them.

Agreed for sure, I’d order a dozen of them for the new house we are building. However barring any major announcement I’ll stick with tried and true.

That would be me also I'd more than happily upgrade to a 4mp version should they ever do that and refine the 4mp starlight tech

Before you guys completely dismiss high megapixel cameras as inferior in the dark, perhaps take a look at some high megapixel cameras with some monster optics.
For example, this camera has a massive 4/3" sensor 8MP and the illumination specs are astronomical compared to any starlight I've seen:

Minimum Illumination
0.0005Lux/F0.95 (Color,1/3s,30IRE)
0.003Lux/F0.95 (Color,1/30s,30IRE)
0.0003Lux/F0.95 (B/W,1/3s,30IRE)
0.002Lux/F0.95 (B/W,1/30s,30IRE)

And the cost is????

Don't forget you'll need a enclosure to put that box cam in as well

I think what were getting at is that it is more than most people on here would be willing to spend on a single camera.

I would almost guarantee that a 2mp starlight mounted in the correct place would have as good a chance to ID someone in pitch black as this,

Sony forget this diesnt have ir either

Don't forget to pick up their recommended lens since one is not included...only $528 at NewEgg.
12MP 8.5 mm Fixed Lens – Dahua North America

Yeah, It would be awesome but until that Lotto ticket # is right, I'm pretty happy with the 2MP Starlights so far...although would it be too much to ask for maybe a reasonably priced 4MP 1\1.9 Starlight version some day soon? It feels like the 5231's have been out a long time now and getting "old". One would think something new and reasonably priced should be on the horizon soon to improve upon it.

I think that's what the 4mp is trying to be but from release hasn't quite hit the spot

Me too. And surely it can't be too long until this becomes a reality, although I can see how it might take a little longer to design and manufacturer (at scale) a VF version, especially for a new sensor, and didn't the 5231 get released some time after the equivalent fixed lens version as well?

Not sure if you are still looking but you should look at the T5442TM-AS.
It is the 5231 but upgraded to 4MP.
