FAST▪︎HP EliteDesk 800 G1▪︎ SFF i7-4790 3.6GHz▪︎16gb▪︎256gb▪︎Windows 10 Pro | eBay

wiki tells me this will work well. 4th gen i7.

I have two Dahua 2MP starlight cameras right now. Probably max 8 (say 10 for future proof) camera setup with 4 being 2MP and 4-6 being 4MP (just guessing right now). Right now on Synology SS but adding slowly as I learn and I'm sure I will end up on BI. Figuring it out.

Just not sure of the price for these older gen CPUs.

way overpriced. If you are patient, 8th generation i5-8500 systems which are more powreful than these older i7's can be had for 400-420.

Yes but the elitedesk will have room for two full size drives plus ssds... You just need to watch for the deal I posted a thread with a link last month... The seller posted another two this past week... So you just need to keep an eye out for them
HP Elitedesk SFF G4
or
NEW HP ProDesk 600 G4 Microtower PC Intel® Core™ i5-8500
or
Searching for a desktop for blue iris

Believe you are talking about one of these. Though second one was a price mistake.

EDIT again - I think it is the third link above since you specifically mention to the OP the $404 price. I'll track that seller.

Listen to fenderman. Fenderman has saved me a lot of money and headache. He also caught that my ISP started to charge me $10/month for a $50 modem which would've cost me hundreds in a few years.

Anyway, I was able to purchase (2) HP EliteDesk G4 800 i5-8500 for ~$400 each. It took me about 3 weeks of hunting to find them at this price.

The lowest I see right now is here for $500 that you can watch and see if it drops in price:
HP EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF 3.00Ghz i5-8500 8GB DDR4 128GB SSD Windows 10 Pro j | eBay

It seems the $400-420 price was coming from 1 seller on ebay - you can keep an eye on his store if he sells more:
HTGINC | eBay Stores

So no one is confused Fenderman found and posted all of this already - the thread below has info on parts and some suggestions for storage. I went with the NVMe 500gb for $66 and (1) 10TB WD Purple:
HP Elitedesk SFF G4

I decided on this due to the size of the machine and how much storage it can handle:
-2 3.5 HDD
-2 SSD
-2 NVMe slots

I’ve found patience is a virtue when hunting for kit on eBay. I got my i5-6500 hp 600 G2 desktop for uk £110 whereas the average selling price at the time was £200 so if you can wait it out. I’ve just had a look and it does seem that prices have dropped to around £160 now.

What if i wanted to stay below $250 for a budget? From what I’m reading, and checking out the BI page that lists what computers people are running at what load, seems like i could get away with an older machine for less and run my contemplated setup well.

Suggestions in the $250 range? Thanks for your help

Take your time and search as others have said and plan now for the future. Do you want good or cheap? Pick one and I’d think that @fenderman can easily make a suggestion. But good and cheap? Not so easy, you’ve got an investment planned for the system as a whole. My dad told me years ago rest his soul “don’t dig a $2 hole for a $20 rose”, same thoughts come into mind here. Take your time.

what i am looking for is different than cheap: up to the task (with the parameters I’ve outlined) and $250 or less. Just figuring out the options.

@VorlonFrog - For a little more I'm seeing 6th gen i5 - Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF , i5-6500 - 8gb - 500gb HDD - Win 10 Pro | eBay. This would get me H.265 hardware acceleration for the future. Holds both 3.5 and 2.5 disks, though it says up to 500GB only. I'm assuming people ignore that and come out alright if you decide to put in a 4TB WD purple drive. Seems I keep seeing people post about older desktops with larger HDD.

Not saying this one is the best price (i'm figuring out what to buy, then will work on a good price).

Yup, you can certainly pay more and get a newer/more capable system.
I was trying to stick with your $250 price range.

-- I appreciate that. Probably seems a little scatter-brained of me...I'm zeroing in around the answers as I learn. I don't have a hard budget yet, but was hoping to stick near that. Getting closer to understanding what I need to run my specs well plus some future proofing. If that ends up being more, and I see the value, then I'll adjust the budget.

-- Thank you for your replies. This one does not include OS; I emailed seller to double check.

. Interesting. Passmark CPU Benchmark puts this at about the same level (a little lower) as the i5-8500. While I'd like to be lower, if I did choose to spend this much, it seems better value to go with the one you suggested before (elitedesk i5-8500) given the configuration/size. I appreciate the options. Taking notes in OneNote and getting closer to understanding my cost-value analysis.

They just write that it doesn't include the OS because they don't install it... The OS will activate all you need is to use the media creation tool... It's not need a license key as Microsoft stores specific information about each PC that has ever been activated it auto activates.
Yes the 8th generation is a better value...some people just have hard numbers they won't exceed. In the grand scheme of things 200 bucks is nothing...
