Reuse existing coax?

First off, I’m glad I came across this forum as it has more helpful info than I’ve ever seen.
I currently have a cheap Night Owl system that’s wired with the analog bnc cabling. I’m wanting to go to a POE style system. I’ve seen adapters that convert the end connectors(yellow and red) to POE on each end. Has anyone used these and had good success? If I have to run all new Ethernet cabling then I will, but just figured it would save me a lot of attic work if I could reuse the existing cabling. Thanks!

Please post a link to the adapters.
If you are up for it, run new ethernet (solid copper no CCA copper clad aluminium junk).
Also look at dahua epoe cameras/switches and adapters.

Gotcha. I see what you’re saying now. Looks like those are used if you have Ethernet cabling existing and wanting to run analog cameras. I thought I saw a few adapters that would work somewhere but it’s probably best to abandon the old and go with new.

Hi @Valton

note - a lot of the more affordable kits cheap out on the cable. So you'll want to check to see if any spec info is printed on the cable to help determine the quality and how thick the conductor in the cable is.

Yes, those are to run analog cams that run on 12VDC over Ethernet (like CAT-5e or 6) which you don't have.

@Valton ,
If they don't state if they're CCA and not the desired solid copper, here's an easy test: if possible grab a 50 ft. (or equivalent to what came in the kit) solid copper roll of CAT-5e in one hand and in the other hand one of the rolls that came in the kit (hopefully same length at the solid copper CAT-5e).....you'll immediately notice a BIG difference in weight and roll diameter; the CCA will be noticeably lighter and smaller in roll diameter than a comparable length of solid copper CAT-5e.

Thanks guys for all the info. Dreading going up in the attic this time of year in the Florida heat lol. I may fish the front 3 camera wires through the aluminum soffit to one centralized spot to make life easier. Do the same for the back of the home as well.

Better now than July or August or September or . . . especially if you go up there about 6:00 or 7:00 AM before it heats up too badly.

If you have not run your network cable yet you can consider the Ethernet over Coax with POE that I have tested. If you are interested, I can sent more details here.

I have used many Ethernet over COAX with POE devices from Axis and another company (I think it was BlackBox IIRC) and never had an issue. Very useful for elevators and pole mounted parking lot cameras. You'd have to weigh the cost/benefit to see if it is worth it over pulling CAT6.

I highly recommend taking a closer look at the cable, as I highly suspect you have subpar coax cable due to "cheap Night Owl System" with "the analog bnc cable" ( which I take it to be the cable included in the cheap Night Owl kit.. )

If this is the case, imho you really do want to avoid spending a lot in an attempt to keep that cable.
