Ok this may be a dumb question...

Going to order an NVR without HDD, install HDD easy enough... how do I get the software on to it then?

Sorry I can't answer your question, but Will you go with the "stated tb limit" or will you put something in bigger.

There is not enough empirical evidence as to how many terabytes you can put in these dahua / dahua like nvrs.

NVR function is in firmware, including maintenance / utilities section which will allow you to format the new drive.....IOW, you don't need to download or install software on the NVR.

Just insure you purchase a HDD that is rated for surveillance (such as WD Purple) and conforms to the NVR's stated max size (like 2, 4, or 6 TB).

Two questions

Assuming a drive can be returned for a full refund, is there any harm in trying to use a bigger drive?

If a purple 10tb formats and initially works well in an nvr "rated" for 6tb, is there a higher probability the nvr will later reject it?

Really interested. Bought a dahua qsee 32 channel from Costco, yet to use it. It came with two 4tb purples occupying the two two drives. It's rated for 6tb but really want to try 8 or 10tb but want more feedback 1st.

Unfortunately already sent nvr overseas so I don't have hands on at the moment.

FYI - numerous folks have reported to successfully install 8TB HDD in various Dahua NVRs... 10 TB should also work imho so I would be willing to try that also..

Yeah there are also numerous people who have found that the stated hard drive capacity limit is exactly that.

I can vouch for the 4xxx series being in that category.

Hi Barboots,

What firmware version and what was the maximum HDD you were able to install?

On another forum, numerous users have upgraded a Lorex "lite" NVR from a Costco kit with a 8TB HDD and have had success. This NVR is certainly not even a Dahua OEM 4xxx series one.

6TB on 3.215.000000.4 (2018-01-19)

I posted about it, as a I had bought an 8TB WD Purple and the NVR flatly refused to recognise it, even after I tried formatting it externally. I'm not going to guarantee that I had the flavour of the format correct... my Linux knowledge is not strong.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks Steve @Barboots

btw - Standard procedure is to format the HDD in the NVR. ( I'm not even certain of what format the NVRs take )

in the following thread you noted that a 6TB HDD did not work in the NVR-4116-4KS2.
Dahua NVR: support for larger HD than specified 4 TB possible ?
NVR-4116-4KS2... definitely no go at 6TB.
Did you mean a 8TB HDD??

In the following you noted issues with a 8TB HDD w/ the "I forgot the 6TB limit for my NVR 4116HS-4KS2"
( btw thanks for the pictures, very good to share with others looking at the NVR4xxx series of NVRs )

You're correct on all corrections to my recollections Mat200 ... I had mixed things up a bit including the drive size and actual fault. The 8TB did actually format, but was unstable in operation.

To be clear I did allow the NVR to format the drive from out of the packaging. Other methods were subsequent to the NVR not running smoothly.

The 6TB Purple was immediately OK.

Apologies for the incorrect info...

Cheers, Steve
