so I have blue iris installed on a designated pc and I have been reading the VPN primer for noobs thread. So I got the openVPN installed on all computers in the house and on my phone and I noticed that my blue iris IP addresses lan and wan have a xxx.xxx. xx.xx:81 . Does this mean port 81 is forwarded?

openvpn does not need to be installed on all computers in the house.

There are two components to openvpn the server and the client. Where is the server openvpn located ? Some system have it configured on the router. (ASUS...).

The client openvpn needs to be installed on remoted devices ( tablet, phones, PCs ) that are external to your home network. There is a configuration file that is used to configure the openvpn client. You execute the client openvpn to connect to your local network. Your are now on your home network ,using the local ip addresses of blue iris system and the port number of the BI web server.

The 81 is the port number configured on the BI web server that will be responded too. IN BI you can change this port number. This is NOT a forwarded port.

Ok thanks. I have a asus router and enabled openVPN on it. I did copy the configuration file from the router to openVPN config folder for both desktops, plus my laptop and my phone. Quess I can uninstall openVPN from my desktops then

If the asus router is configured for OPENVPN. You do not need openvpn on any computers in your home network. You do not need to use openvpn on your phone when at home and on your home wifi.

Use the openvpn client on the phone when away from home. Or at home and using the cell network and not the wifi network. For testing I disable the wifi on the cell phone and test the openvpn connection when at home.

Think of OpenVPN as a gateway into you own home network. So when at home you don’t need to use the gateway as you are already at home. Use the gateway I.e. the OpenVPN client when away from home, which the effectively puts the remote device within your home network via the gateway.
