Hi everyone,

I am new and my system will have 6 2mp cameras recording 24/7 to a Dahua NVR.

What size hard drive is suggested?

I am leaning on WD Purple 3tb due to best value vs price.

I have 3x 2mp cameras recording 24/7 and when I had a 3tb, it only gave me 2.5 weeks footage. That means you'll have a little over a week of footage unless you lower the bitrate dramatically.

I now have an 8tb drive, as I intend to add more cameras.

Go bigger.

can only accept max of 6tb I think. I will get one of those.

Do peeps use the Seagate varieties or is it best to stick to WD Purple? Thanks.
It's kind of a Ford vs, Chevy thing there, IMO. Many swear by Seagate, I've bought & installed several hundred WD Blues & Blacks and probably 50 Purples over the years and have had only 1 out-of-the-box issue, which WD swapped out via the vendor, newegg. So for me, it's WD Purple.
Of course, YMMV. :idk:

I have them both installed in NAS boxes, often in the same box and the Seagates run 3-4 degrees cooler but still nothing significant. When looking around online, I do tend to see more complaints about failures with Seagates than I do with the WDs. But then Seagates are often a few dollars cheaper from what I've seen. I agree w/ Tony that this is really subjective though and if you look around enough, you can find testimonials that support whatever side you're' on.

I definitely agree w/ the "go big as you can mentality". I have yet to ever look back and say I wasted money by going bigger. I have before looked back and said I SHOULD HAVE gone bigger.

Boys thanks. For me in Australia, its the same price. I will go purple. Size is easy. I can only go 6 due to being limited by nvr. :)

Also from my perspective, it's very very unlikely that I will ever identify anyone from these cameras. They are more for deterrence..... and fun project.

Keep in mind that the 6TB limit stated in that spec sheet may be the largest drive available at that time, so that's what is listed. Hikvision has done that over time, listing the current max-capacity drive as the largest the NVR can handle - when in fact it can handle much larger drives as they came out later. That may also be the case with your setup.

Yeah I was going to say that too. It might accept an 8TB or bigger.

Should I risk a 12tb?

Wonder why the nvr would be limited anyways. Due to architecture or chipset
