1) download the OpenVPN connect client app from the Google store.
2) configure the app or if using an asus router of openvpn, export the configuration file.
3) use UI3 or the android Blue iris app also downloaded from the google store.

Any chance you can guide me through this setup? I have the BlueIris android app and I've downloaded the OpenVpn connect app. I 've entered the sername and so on but that's about it. Couldn't add the profile.

Nope. does not work
I'm assuming that you actually configured a VPN server on your router and all the necessary port forwarding / firewall rules associated with the VPN server? Also created and exported the necessary .OVPN file and configured it to either specify your static IP address from your ISP or your DDNS name?

Also make sure you didn't just enable a VPN client on your router or enter the VPN credentials from some 3rd party VPN service (NORD-VPN for example) as this will not work for what you are trying to achieve.

If all the above has been done and your VPN client says connected on your mobile phone, then try pinging your BI server IP address (example 192.168.1.10) from your phone and see if you get a reply. If it doesn't then your VPN client isn't routing to your local network. If it does then check you have the correct username and password in BI for the user you are trying to login as. Also on the BlueIris app on your phone make sure you are connecting to the IP address and port 192.168.1.10:5151 (you can check the port numbers you should be using in settings > web server on the BI application on your Windows PC)

On mine Openvpn assigns an ip like 10.8.x.x. I have to put that in android app with whatever port number BI is using for http web server, such as 10.8.1.1:1234. This is in the wan section of the logon info of android app.

Don't use the OpenVPN ip address to connect to your BI server, use the ip address your Windows 10 pc that runs BlueIris has allocated to it.

I will try to work though this with you.
1) what is the make and model of you router ?
2) Does the router provide a DDNS (dynamic directory name service ) ?
3) provide a screen shot of the Router configuration screen for OpenVpn.
4) did you download the OVPN file to your android cell phone ?

Sorry for this delay, but I've had other pressing engagements.
1) Linksys WRT 1900ACS running DD-WRT v.3 firmware
2) Yes
3) VPN and VPN_a.jpg included
4) No
I have a subscription from NordVPN.

This is going to take multiple posts.

My general VPN post

There are two types of VPN, do not get them confused.
The type depends on where the traffic conversation originates
1) origination: local home network, destination the internet.
The type of VPN hides your activity from the internet, it is outbound, it normally costs a monthly fee to use. Direction is from your home PC to the internet, going to your bank, google, porn sites,,,, this not what you want
2) Origination: the internet world wide web, destination: your home network
This VPN type is used to provide a secure connection onto your local network, in bound to you local home network, from your office computer, your cell phone in your car, tablet at the coffee shop.. This is what you want, it does not have a monthly fee and is normally completely free. OpenVPN is this type of VPN.
If you home internet provider is a cellular network, then DDNS (dynamic Domain Name System) may not work, the DDNS is needed for most Inbound VPN services (OpenVpn), so OpenVPN may not work for you.

The use of openVPN has nothing to do with NORDVPN. We will not be using NORDVPN.
I do not have experience mixing a commercial VPN (NORDvpn) service with OpenVPN.
I have not set up OpenVPN on a Linksys , I have do it on an ASUS router.

1) do you have a DDNS ? (Yes) who is the DDNS provider ?
2) From your home network on a PC using the command prompt can you ping the DDNS name ? Note the address it returns. what are the first three numbers it returns?
ping.jpg

3) does the address from the ping match the external address that is displayed on your router ?

NOTE: NEVER DISPLAY YOUR EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS or the full DDNS NAME on a post,

For OpenVpn your linksys router is the SERVER. For OpenVPN your phone is the client. Your setup for your router has a openvpn client set up, this is wrong, it should be a Server

note:
Private ip addresses. Local IP addresses. These addresses are NOT used by the internet. They are for your local home/business network.
