Door Checker?

This morning this guy was in my driveway. Looks like he is running from someone? He avoided my cameras fairly well. Got a reasonable profile view.

He ran across the street and messed with a car in the driveway, but I do not think he got in. He then ran across the front yards staying close to the houses and turned the corner.

I have tried to get better video by attempting to adjust the shutter speed as discussed by @wopi82 in his common issues thread. But if I set it to manual and make the shutter speed faster, I get flicker. Camera is an IPC-HDW5231R-ZE.

Not a bad picture at all. I would say he is identifiable. Also in my neighborhood the car door checkers have dropped to almost zero. Maybe one in the last 5 months. Maybe from all the new cameras in the neighborhood.

This is only the second time I have had one since the cameras went up December 2018. Last one was June 2019.

The snapshot from BI is not bad because he paused a bit. But the video is not as clear as I want. I guess I need more light.

I like the idea of posting it on your Nextdoor app for the neighborhood. I know "technically" he didn't break any law but playing hide and seek in your driveway at 4am is at least suspicious. Hopefully someone in your neighborhood might recognize him.

Talked to the guy across the street as the BG spent some time at the car in the driveway there. As it turns out, he has a camera on the fence post with a motion light, which on one of my cameras you can see it come on. Did not phase this guy at all. Even with the motion light coming on, he stayed there for a while before running off.

Yes I did post it on Nexdoor. Debating w/myself on whether to call the Constable or not.

That's not random door checking. He's got zero interest in your vehicle other than using it for cover. So is he running from someone or does he have a specific interest in your neighbor's stuff? What are the odds somebody goes out for a stroll at 4AM and needs to hide from some bad guys and he just happens to be wearing almost all black?

Personally I would call. If nothing else, you'd have at least one area cop who would be aware of it. Nothing I'd think they could do as no laws broken. Hopefully this could help them solve another crime though. (give leads, info, etc)

Exactly my thought. But it sure seems like he knows my cameras are there and he avoids looking at them. He did not run down the street but along people's front yards close to the homes, maybe to avoid being seen? He spent a lot of time across the street and while he was there, a black pickup came from the direction he came from. Maybe he was hiding from them? Maybe he was spotted while taking something and the truck was looking for him?

Not bad at all as mentioned. Trying to get less blur takes some work. Faster shutter for sure, and lower DNR. Then you'll get to the pont where it gets grainy and darker. Have to thread the needle on the balance between the two.

I went the motion sensor flood (an extra 3400 lumens helps) route in my drive. Of course the 5442 1/1.8" sensor helps

Flicker from street lamps is a problem indeed. I'm also experiencing it with my street lamp. I don't think there is any reasonable solution to it, other than using slower shutter speeds - which is of course opposite to what I wrote in common issues. But that's the only thing that comes to my mind. Also using WDR at night might sometimes help, but it also may introduce other set of problems.

I think it's an excellent video image and snapshot.
He appears to be wearing a backpack. No doubt in my mind he's up to no good.
Looks very young. Probably lives nearby. Somebody is going to recognize him.
I would definitely share that with the police.

Great video and picture, please send it to the police, or share it with the constable on nextdoor they have a link to share it with them. He is hiding because he hears the car or what ever it is that is driving by. He is out checking doors, they always wear black and they always have a back pack and they always go out between 3am til 5 am. I have recorded enough of the degenerates i know. And just like @bigredfish said the more light you can blast out there the better. They don't care about the lights but it gives us better descriptions of what they have on and a perfect view for law enforcement. More light and starlight cameras is a positive thing. Any camera looks good during the day. So bring the day to the night and get better shots. the cops would be able to identify the picture of this degenerate if they had to. Oh yeah there is another good thing i noticed in the picture: The backpack is empty.

Thanks @bigredfish and @wopi82 . I will give that more attention.

Gave videos to the Constables. They believe he had been spotted breaking into someone's vehicle and he ran off. He was likely attempting to conceal himself from a pickup truck coming down the road. I gave the Constables a few videos of his actions. There were several B&Es of cars here last night.

I have a few new cameras coming this week from Andy and will set up a comparison between them and the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE that his video is from. Should be interesting. They are a T2431T-AS in 2.8mm, T5442TM-AS in 2.8mm and T2231T-ZS varifocal.

For a comparison, here is a video of the guy from my neighbor's Ring camera. You can see the POS running from my driveway to his.
Which would you prefer? The Ring or the Dahua?
Yeah, your Dahua wins hands down. Congrats!
More data points. Let's profile. This very scared person is not interested in your car or your neighbor's. He didn't check either. But he seems to be very scared about being seen and is carefully avoiding "someone" looking for him. My assumption is that he already committed a crime or got spooked trying and is working his way back home. He's unlike your typical dirtbag thief who keeps committing crimes along their path. Any idea who the owner of the black pickup is? What are they doing out at 4am? Looking for this person or just a random drive by?

Actually, yes. Since I posted this on the NextDoor app, my friend from down the street said that was him heading to work. He is a Life Flight helicopter pilot. He said he did not see the guy and from the Ring video from across the street, the POS was hiding behind the red car in the driveway. My friend stated he had seen a white 4door go up the street before he got in the truck. So I went further back on the video and there was a white 4door that travelled in the same direction as our BG. He must have been hiding in my neighbor's yard at that time. Then the white sedan came back down the street and made a right at my corner. That is what he is hiding from when he crouches down at my Jeep.

So the Pct4 Constables used my snapshot on their FaceBook page to solicit info on the guy. From their post and other folks on NextDoor, this guy accessed 10-15 vehicles, all unlocked. There were videos of him from about 2:45am through 5:00am, and he covered quite a bit of ground.

As a follow up...Friday a deputy showed up and wanted to take pictures of my camera and get info on them. She stated that several in her department thought the snapshot was photoshopped. The Pct4 Constable had placed it on their FaceBook page asking for info. The deputy said they have already gotten a few people giving tips based on my photo.

I have had a few folks in the neighborhood ask me about my system. Every one of those have either a Nest, Ring, or Arlo and have been very unhappy with the result. At least one of those folks have checked out IPCAMTALK as I gave them the forum link.

Best Ring shot opportunity when the suspect was not moving much and had a good side profile to the camera.
( posting this in case of issues accessing neighbors website. Notice how just a little movement by the suspect results in a blurry image in low light conditions.. )

Tried to get a snap shot of the embedded time stamp - looks like the time stamp does not progress, so suspect that it is not a proper embedded time stamp but something Ring overlays onto the video and is potentially problematic compared to what we mostly see in IP PoE cameras which embedded the time stamp into the H.264 /H.265 stream it created. ( and thus more sound forensically )
