My buddy Bones was huffing and puffing at the back door this morning.
Figured he had to go pee or something but when I let him out, he ran straight out chasing something. Quite unusual since he doesn't move like that much anymore... he's 12 years old.
Couldn't figure out what it was until I checked the camera. That chipmunk almost got caught.

Camera is a Dahua "booby" cam IPC-HDBW4241F-M with the 2.8mm lens- I wish I'd purchased the 3.6mm but this gives me a nice overview of the side gate and backyard.

We did the same thing one night. However we did not realize there was a skunk in the back yard. Our 12 year old dog took off after it but stopped in the nick of time and did not get squirted by the Skunk. A very close call.
Yes, VERY lucky.
And speaking of skunks and close calls, I recall you posted a clip before where your wife almost ran into one on your house's walkway; another time you posted a mama skunk with several youngsters parading by on the sidewalk, right?

Squirrel: "Heh, taht old Bones...he be napping, cos he too old."
Bones: "Did I say you can come in MY garden, BITCH?"

I hope you gave Bones his favourite treat, he's got your back. You need to get a young dog to learn the ropes off old Bones before he goes to rainbow bridge. He's is on the ball.
P.S. If Bones is anything like my dogs he meant business there because he didn't make any sound. My dogs bark/and/or growl to give a warning, but if they are intent on killing something they won't make any sound at all.
Not ready for another dog. Our boxer died a little over a year ago. He was 14 and taught Bones "the ropes." Especially how to act around our kids. I know it won't be long before Bones is gone too. It was hard enough explaining how his buddy died. Not looking forward to it. Our 3 year old still asks about Dagger and is adamant that Bones not go to the vet because he might not come back.

When I lived in Lagos my two dogs would chase the cranes that came to drink from the pool. The dogs were sisters from the same litter. Daphne was the runt and Penny was much bigger. But Daphne was the one that always had the 'situational awareness' on full while Penny just nosed around and took her que from Daphne. Daphne would spy a crane landing by the pool edge and she would silently take off towards it. But Penny would notice Daphne running and since her vocal cords were connected to her feet, she would bark as she ran. This would scare the crane and it would fly away. This would really piss Daphne off. She would give Penny this look, like 'dumb ass!' why did you have to bark?

Daphne passed last year. Penny is doing well, and is 15 now.

Pic from 2008. Daphne running after a crane that has already taken off with Penny in the back running and barking.
