I am not a fan of any ring products. They are for the non-tech average Joe.
Anyway I guess they will get a few people to waste $200 on a car cam when you can do the same with a smart phone.

I have been using the ring alarm Gen 1 for home and my office and it works flawlessly. It is by far the cheapest option with monitoring at 8.30 a month which includes cellular backup. I am glad they are decimating the overpriced competition.
You cannot do the same with a smartphone. If you put your smart phone in your window, you know exactly what will happen to it. Repurposing a smartphone is a cute idea but always has issues, reboots, overheat, etc and murphy will certainly strike. You will also need to pay for cell service if you want to track that old smartphone. The car alarm without camera is 60 bux and plugs right into your obd.

I completely agree about the cell phone issue while driving. I keep mine in my pocket and it stays there until the engine is off, even if it rings..

Do you have an opinion on gen 1 verses gen 2? I'm just starting to look into ring security system. Wholey decided against their cameras obviously but security system a different beast. We love our Alexa's so whatever works into that is great.

I have installed the gen 2 for a friend. The base stations are identical, the sensors and keypad have been redesigned. Definitely go with gen 2. Buy it from costco if you have a membership - that way you can return it anytime if you dont end up liking it.

I love my gen 2's and the integration with alexa is awesome. You can do so much with the sensors and motion detectors. I have dash cams that record when cars are parked and i have a ring motion detector in my truck, that i use to keep an eye on the door checkers. I am sure the tech nerds will try this car camera out because it is cool to show off.

Question again is going to be picture quality. There are some very good dashcameras for aound the £100 mark. Unless you want or need cloud backup, something that's not really necessary in my opinion, I cannot see a market niche for Ring other than using brand loyalty for sales or those who want to show off to their mates with Alexe voice commands. Then again, maybe they'll surprise us with a fantastic picture. I'm just not holding my breath.

These are not the dash cams. They are essentially alarms and tracking devices for cars that send you notifications which Include Video as well.

I'm still not really seeing the point. Most cars have a Thatcham quality alarm and immoboliser fitted anyway these days. In the UK at least, nearly all stolen cars are either older models without built in security, or key thefts where the key is physically stolen from a property or electronically cloned by signal capture / amplificiation. Cars stolen the old fashioned way are virtually unheard of due to the low volume of old cars that were pre-high security measures and the effectiveness of modern immobolisers. Parking cover is alredy provided by dashcams with parking mode. I guess each to their own though. Maybe they're trying to create a market niche and maybe the states has a higher proportion of older vehicles / people who leave objects in sight in cars. There are thefts from cars in the UK but they're relatively low as very few people leave objects in sight. I think a high level of thefts a few years ago and government campaigns have been quite good in changing people's habits over here.

Most cars do not have alarms that notify you when it goes off. There are millions of people who live in cities with street parking and cannot hear it blaring. Moreover, hundreds of millions of people who have driveways, actually drive their cars, park them and walk away outside of range to hear the alarm go off. The average age of a vehicle in the US is 10.6 years. There are plenty of newer cars stolen every day. Your dashcam is worthless for catching someone going trough your vehicle. The unit may if ring chooses also be able to detect if your vehicle is being jacked up to remove the wheels and tires.
There is an insane increase in vehicle crime as a result of lax enforcement by liberal democrat prosecutors and mayors as well as bail reform mixed with terrorist movements like BLM/Antifa.

Fair comment. Hopefully, your home cameras would catch anyone breaking in on your driveway, but I take your point about being away on the street.
