Currently I have:
Firmware version 5.1.6 build 140412
Encoding Version 5.0 build 140411

Camera purchased a year or so ago from Julia @ CCTV China

Should/can I upgrade to a more current firmware version? I notice that 5.3.3 is out for atleast some of the cams.

Thanks in advance for help/suggestions.

Not unless you want your cameras to not work. Read the stickies on this forum section.

I have read the stickies, or at least I thought I had. I was thinking they were guides to updating the firmware for the Chinese cams. Guess not.

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade (like your camera isn't working) then don't do it. Most people who brick their cameras, when you ask why, they don't have an answer.

Also v5.3.3 isn't compatible with your camera. I've got plenty of cameras on older versions than yours, so I do practice what I preach.

Yea, if it's not broke, play with it and it will become broken. I've learned before, if something is working and doing what I need, don't update unless you have to, becasue you run into new problems or mess up the whole thing completely.

First thing you would need to do to the older camera is the mtd hack, that would allow for you to up date to 5.3.0 US firmware.
Then they would work as US camera's.
But also as @Del Boy has pointed out, you won't benefit from going higher in firmware in anyway from 5.1.6
