Which Dahua NVR should I purchase, NVR5216-16P-4KS2E or NVR5216-4KS2?

For someone wanting a camera sysytem for home use and who has little to no experience with a NVR security system, is it better to go with a Dahua NVR with built in PoE, or should I look at a NVR with a seperate PoE switch? I want to take advantage of the cameras IVS features such as tripwire. Can I set up and use all the features of Dahua IVS / smart cameras with the Dahua NVR5216-16P-4KS2E with a built in PoE?

Hi @sdnomad

I went with the PoE ports... otherwise I'd look for a used PC and VMS software...

I'd recommend the one with built-in PoE.

Because if you wanted to, you could always still use an external switch. It simply gives you options.
And with the built-in switch you get a bit of added security as the cameras cant be reached directly from outside or your LAN

Yes

There are some higher level AI functions that you would need to step up to the "I" series but all of the basic IVS stuff is handled with the 5200 series

Recommend you browse the products and different models. Specs clearly state which IVS/AI functions they each handle.
Network Recorders
(Normal IVS functions are commonly referred to as 'Perimeter Protection" in the Dahua specs)

There's so much advice for the built-in switch that I'm not going to post my typical counter-arguments. Just one non-technical thing: If it makes a difference to you, the version with the built in swtch is kind of noisy because of its fans.

Noctua makes quiet fans in that size if your a tinkerer. I tossed one in my Nightowl and It restored my faith in humanity.
