I have two Dahua nvrs with wireless mice. One with the dongle on the front port, the other on the rear port. Plug and play, no re-boot necessary.

I've had 22 cams connected to my 5232-non poe- . Even at high bit rates the nvr can handle them fine as long as you use a gigabit switch.
I think aristobrat's explanation of low light specs is as good as it gets. One thing I might suggest is to just get one 2831t at first and try it...

Have you tried setting up the cam's ivs on the nvr? How are you viewing the nvr? directly or the web interface?

If the blinking led's are bothersome, put a piece of electrical tape over them. That's what I did to mine.
Yes, if mounted on a flat surface there's a nice rubber gasket on the back of the mounting arm, so you wouldn't need the junction box.
