    New Ring Alarm System 199

Chamberlain® Switch Sensor Wide Gap Contact Security Alarm System Outdoor Gate I put on my gate. It will stick out past the gate, and sometimes people think its a handle. I had it connected to my Home automation system, not an alarm, and had some issues with it. For me, it was of limited...

    remote monitoring

FYI, the "standard" recommendation for BI is a dedicated PC with a Western Digital Purple hard drive for recording. I have a 3 tb drive, think it holds a 3-4 weeks of recordings, but that depends on number of cams and data rates. The ethernet speed depends on number of cams, and the data rate...

I can't vpn from work to home, so maybe that's why I'm phone oriented. I guess it would be nice to sit at work, turn on VPN and check out the cams, but my work IT doesn't allow it.

Just say your post, have been away I never setup openvpn on a PC, just on android and iphone. I recommend trying it on a phone, its actually pretty easy, and I expect in real life using it on a phone is more practical. Randy

Oh sorry, I missed that part of your problem. I don't use the iphone app, just the browser. That is strange that the app acts differently for cell vpn. Maybe there are some connection settings in the app you can play with?

What carrier do you guys have? I have an iphone 8 on att. I actually have to turn off wifi because wifi is through work, and my work must be doing some filtering to stop the vpn connection, so wifi won't work for me. But if I turn off wifi, cell works fine to make the openvpn connection. I...

The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies

Its pretty scary that they were able to add those tiny chips to servers. Also scary to think where else they could be right now.

    IP Camera Security

With dual nics, you put all the cams on one nic with their own ip address range, which is a different from the other nic which is connected to your main router. So cams have no access to the internet. I do the same thing with a managed poe switch, all cams are on vlans and can only talk to my...

My router is behind my modem, so a standard configuration. But people run openvpn on pi's, by opening a port from the router to the pi. If you have a combined router/modem, and then a router behind that through an open port running openvpn, I think its a similar situation. I'm pretty sure if...

You might have to use a ddns service like noip. I just switched to a netgear router, and their ddns is through noip, working fine so far. Randy

Think the part number has a typo, doesn't show up in a google search, but there are ones that are close to it. If its a combined modem/router, you may need to port forward it. I have separate modem and router, so didn't have to deal with a combined unit.

Easiest Way to Secure Camera System

If the router ending address is 25x (default may be 254, you can't use 255), then you would need to change it lower. You can't go above 254. I'm not sure about disabling internet access to the PC, my BI PC has internet access, but I have antivirus sw on it too, just to make sure nothing bad...

I'm running the hassio version of mqtt, not a standalone mosquito, and I'm not using ssl. Plus I haven't tried to send mqqt to bi yet, I've only received mqtt from bi at this point. NVR vs dedicated PC

    1. Monitors are pretty cheap these days. Not sure if you can setup without one. 2. Its worth it to get a PC that uses less watts, but you need to make sure it has enough horsepower for the number of cameras you will have. PC is on 24/7, so electricity cost is a factor, and may be cheaper in...

I've transitioned from Domoticz to Home Assistant. Home Assistant has a larger user base and more active development, so it has more and newer devices supported. It takes a while sometimes for new devices to be supported in Domoticz. HA also has a more active forum. Took me a couple weeks...
