help focusing / fine-tuning LPR cam

Thanks to everyone for the tips! I've tried adjusting the focus up and down by units of 1 click, and I think this is the clearest the focus will get. I played around more with some of the Picture settings, and I think it's a tad crisper. I've attached my Video settings. To clarify, the main...

help focusing / fine-tuning LPR cam

I could use some help fine-tuning one of my LPR cams. We have two, one facing each direction on the road. The one that's closet to traffic (East) is very clear day and night. The one that's aimed farther down the road (West) is hazy, for lack of a better term. I've attached some pics to compare...

OpenALPR - cloud vs local - accuracy?

The camera hardware is definitely not the problem. These are HFW5231E-Z12E. They're focused out about 80-90 feet away. This has to be user error on my part. These cameras are amazing.

OpenALPR - cloud vs local - accuracy?

I can't really zoom in more, or else I'll miss part of the road I think. I did increase the bitrate. We'll see if that helps. It's a 25 mph road, but traffic is probably about 35 mph on average. I'm running the Linux daemon in a virtual Ubuntu instance... I was able to add prewarp to...

OpenALPR - cloud vs local - accuracy?

Thanks for the replies! Here are two samples from the local setup that I'm running. This plate was stored as "F5309": This one saved as "0LQD": I set up a mask to ignore the time code at the top. How do I do a different prewarp for two different camera streams? I can't figure out...

OpenALPR - cloud vs local - accuracy?

Hi everyone, I have OpenALPR up and running, and it's scary-amazing how much data it gathers. I decided to try to run it locally to avoid putting all that data on someone else's server. Accuracy with my local install is HORRIBLE, compared to the spot-on accuracy of their cloud solution. For...

    help with OpenALPR on Windows

Thanks everyone! I now have OpenALPR up and running. For the next person who's having trouble, here's what I did: Upgraded my Windows install from 32-bit to 64-bit. Many tutorials online for this step, such as this one. (I got an error when I first tried to install the new version. I had to...

    help with OpenALPR on Windows

Same here, so your post is spot on! Thanks! I'm currently in the process of upgrading my Windows install to 64 bit. Then hopefully Open ALPR will install much more smoothly. I'll post back how it goes...

    help with OpenALPR on Windows

Thank you! Yes, I know OpenALPR doesn't integrate directly within Blue Iris. But I can't figure out how to even run OpenALPR on my camera's video stream. Ijust checked, and apparently I do have a 64-bit processor, just the 32-bit version of Windows 10. Should I try to change my Windows...

    help with OpenALPR on Windows

Hey guys, I'd like to add ALPR to my Blue Iris setup, and I'm honestly not sure how... I'm testing the new Plate Recognizer integration (seems to work well!), but our street is WAY too busy for the free plan to be possible. So I think I need to setup OpenALPR. Is there a post or tutorial...

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

It's a good question. I suppose time will tell. I may have to just clear the lenses once a week or so. It shouldn't be a big deal for me, since it's right on our driveway.

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

Yes. It's a severe problem that can be quite frustrating. As others have reported, it's an issue when you zoom in super far (I think 80% is the reported threshold). I have these zoomed in about 90%. There's two ways we are currently compensating, which seem to work well: 1. The Dahua Sunrise /...

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

The cameras are bolted to the back wall of the houses. I stuffed foam pipe insulation around the cameras to hopefully deter at least large critters from getting inside. Once we're sure we like the angles, I think I'm going to try to cut out a thin piece of wood to fit around the cameras and...

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

DONE! We still need to fine tune the camera settings and focus, but we have our setup installed. We hired an electrician to run CAT6 and electric to a spot near our street. They put in a lamp post for us. I built two "bird houses" that hold the bullet cameras. We plan to make a nice iris bed...

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

Yes. We plan to build little "birdhouses" to put the bullet cameras in. They will be on posts in a flower bed that surrounds the lamp post. Electrician is coming on Monday. I plan to take pics and document the setup as we go. I'll definitely post here.

    faces at night - (5231E-Z12)

I will definitely post it on here. I got the idea from these forums. It's going to have a bullet camera facing out each end, angled to the road for LPR. Gotta figure out all those details and get my handy neighbor to help build it so it doesn't look like a kindergarten craft project.

    faces at night - (5231E-Z12)

Thanks for that tip! I may look into that. Our lamp post that we're putting in will hopefully help with visible light, but we may need to select a different camera angle to best capitalize on that.

Thank y'all! I didn't get a chance to test last night. Hopefully tonight.

    faces at night - (5231E-Z12)

We finally have LPR figured out for our camera setup (we moved the 5231s up the road - we'll hide them in a "birdhouse" next to our new lamp post). Now we're trying to figure out how to get good pictures of faces at night. The daytime is no problem with the LPR camera setup. But night is...

    help tuning night LPR ?

That's SWEET work!! Thanks for sharing! Are you using a separate piece of hardware to sense to the current lighting conditions? Or are you tapping into the Dahua camera's lighting sensors?

    help tuning night LPR ?

Update for those playing along at home: we moved the camera closer to the road, and we have success! My wife deserves the credit for tuning this bad boy and getting it in focus. Now I just have to figure out a "birdhouse" enclosure or something similar so the cameras aren't terrible tacky. :)

    help tuning night LPR ?

Can you elaborate on that script? I'm using the Dahua Sunrise Sunset service to switch between day/night profiles. I'm curious how you're responding to lighting conditions on the fly like that.

How far are you zoomed in for that? Any idea of the distance to the plate?

    help tuning night LPR ?

One reason I bought that illuminator is because of that photo. It really looks like it's going to blast IR in a fairly focused area, which is what I'm wanting. I can mount the illuminator closer to the license plates if necessary (or get a more powerful illuminator).

    help tuning night LPR ?

Thanks for the illuminator tips! I figure that $20 unit off Amazon will let us test the rig, then we can worry about permanent placement later. I think we may need multiple illuminators to light up the whole area where we want to video. The adjustable focus unit looks cool!

    help tuning night LPR ?

Unfortunately, we're at max zoom. We are planning to install a decorative lamp post near the road. But now that I've seen a bullet cam in person, I think it would look a bit CRAZY stuck to the side of a lamp post. :)

    help tuning night LPR ?

Thanks! I already have an IR illuminator coming on Tuesday. This one looks like it should blast some IR right on the road. Is IR what you mean?

    help tuning night LPR ?

Hey guys, I have my IPC-HFW5231E-Z12 setup on a post in a bucket, Blue Iris is running, and all is going pretty well! Thanks to my wife's help (she's a photographer & graphic designer), we have a pretty good view of license plates during the day: We're having trouble at night, which is...

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

Thank you! Our street is fairly dark at night, but our new lamp post should help with that some. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and try the Z12. I gotta do something. :)

new LPR install with Dahua - look ok? (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12)

Thanks! Is there a cam that's more recommended for this purpose? I have seen the focus issues and B&W<->color issues discussed here.
