    Hi,

Did someone compared the two different kind of IR LED technology (example picture below) ? old one with tons of small IR LED and newer one with only a few big high power LED ?

Any pros/cons ? how do they compare for same current usage and life time ? may be big LED are more energy efficient and/or more powerfull ?

I guess new SMD LED technology is better but if anyone did its own realife testing...

SMD is far superior, they are directional and higher power.. where as through hole diodes are omnidirectional and low power.

On cameras SMD will attract less bugs as they focus the light out and away from the camera, the round through hole diodes on the other hand light the whole face of the camera with massive level of IR and make it look like a big beacon.

OK this is what I thought, but for the flying bugs, I have tons of them in front of 4x SMD IR LED camera this is why I am asking as I want to move IR light source a few steps away from camera that will also help when I get a lot of light reflection because of some spider web or when its raining/snowing.

I said it'd help; it wont completely solve the issue.. external IR will prevent such issues if you have the option to disable the onboard IR..

moving the light source a few feet away from the camera is quite beneficial for many reasons, for example you get shadows on the face which provides depth detail.

Yes of course I did not mentionned it but I planned to disable the internal IR (without it it would not avoid the reflection problems), my soldering iron is always ready to heat when it's not playing with some Arduino or ESP8266 microcontroller ;-)

I've tried the 2nd one (with the small LED's); it's bad.
I have a Hikvision dome camera mounted on an outside wall directly above the garagedoor/driveway and IR output is not that great and of course there's the issue with bugs, flies and even a snail...

Anyway; had it next to the camera and output was disappointing. Result was a tiny brighter spot in the middle and no more light around the middle. IR output of the dome was brighter then the IR spot.

Was sometimes tempted to buy the first kind but my disappointing experiences with the first one stopped me.

Ive been contemplating the harbor freight solar motion white led lights and buying a sheet of pass ir polycarbonate. Ill either remove the light cover that comes with the light or fix the pass ir over it. The ir sheet I'm looking at should pass no visible light.
