NordVPN is to hide your IP address for um, well... You would need to run NordVPN and then OpenVPN to get into your system...but why go thru two VPNs, just use OpenVPN and be done with it.

A paid VPN is not needed to access BI remotely.

I bought NordVPN months ago sooo...
Stop using it. Why would you pay a random company to slow down your internet connection? Its useless with zero upside. I would sooner trust my isp with my browsing history than some little hole in the wall who has no accountability. Just because you paid for it doesnt mean you need to keep using it.

Your problem is that NordVPN is changing (masking) your IP address. This confuses OpenVPN, as the DDNS is incorrect.
------------------------
My general VPN post
There are two types of VPN, do not get them confused.
The type depends on where the traffic conversation (traffic) originates

1) origination: local home network, destination the internet.
This type of VPN is purpose to hides your activity from the internet, it is outbound, it normally costs a monthly fee to use. Direction is from your home PC to the internet, going to your bank, google, porn sites,,,, this not what you want. This VPN uses a VPN server that is in the middle of your communications.

2) Origination: the internet world wide web, destination: your home network.
This VPN type is used to provide a secure connection onto your local network, in bound to you local home network, from your office computer, your cell phone in your car, tablet at the coffee shop.. This is what you want, it does not have a monthly fee and is normally completely free. OpenVPN is this type of VPN.

If your home internet provider is a cellular network, then DDNS (dynamic Domain Name System) may not work, the DDNS is needed for most Inbound VPN services (OpenVpn) to get your home IP address (it is not static) so OpenVPN may not work for you.

A video on the paid VPN.

What would be really helpful is some specific details on configuring remote access for Blue Iris.
Some people have public IPs (DSL, Cable, etc) and some (like me) are behind Carrier-Grade NATs with no chance of a public IP.

NordVPN has an option of Dedicated IP for your connection but as with all things precious, I am sure it costs more.

I have just emailed Blue Iris about this, asking for a feature update, for a fee, to get Blue Iris accessible behind any kind of network. We will see what happens.

In the meantime, if there are some people out there that have a fool-proof solution, how about share the knowledge and post some detailed docs?

Thanks

There are multiple threads that discuss this. See ngrok or hamachi.

A lot of these VPNs are run out of third world countries who dont have a pot to piss in. No reason to use them unless you are trying to hide pirated software from your ISP.
I use nord to stream movies when we are RVing. A lot of campground/RV parks have free WiFi but have certain services blocked. It’s not just for pirated software. Although it’s good for that too.

Yeah its great for getting around blocked services. My issues is more about their laws (or lack of them). NordVPN in located in Panama. How much money would it really take to bribe someone working there to reveal private information? Probably not much since its a shit hole to begin with down there. Nothing is preventing them from selling private information as well about all their subscribers. Again, because its a shit hole with little to no oversight for this kind of stuff and probably no penalties if they actually get caught doing it.
