So, I just terminated my first rj45 cable and it all seemed to go well until I tested it. I use the following tester AUCAS Network Cable Tester rj45 RJ11 Network LAN Ethernet RJ45 Cable Tester tool-in Networking Tools from Computer & Office on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

The cable I'm using is Siemon Cat6a F/UTP
    and the connectors are:
    - Siemon Z-Max Keystone Benefits of Z-MAX Category 6A Cabling Systems: UTP and Shielded

    - Aucus Aucas CAT7 RJ45 plug shield FTP 8P8C Network Crimp Connector-in Computer Cables & Connectors from Computer & Office on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

As I was using a keystone on one end I had to use another cable between it and the tester. Its a cat6E cable (yes E).
Now, the test results. It blinked 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,G and missed 1
So, I re terminated the rj45 end and got the same result.
Then I re terminated the keystone end the result.... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,G :wow:
Later I decided to show the wife my good work and I got 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,G again :banghead:
So, I turned the cable around and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,G.....hmmm
Tried another cable, a cat5E that came with the my powerline adapters and I got 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,G no matter which way he cable was plugged in.
More testing, different cables, some the 1 light flashed, some it didn't........

Also, it seems to make a difference if the slave or master is plugged into the keystone.

Anyone know whats going on here?

Do I need a better tester?

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

    UPDATE:
    Decided to try another test.
I hooked the cable up between the modem and the cable to this computer, I'm writing this post with it there.

So, it works?? But isn't testing well??

The most common problems are not inserting the wires far enough into the RJ45 plug and wires not ending up in the correct spots as you push the connector on.
Verify the color order and full insertion before you crimp. Punch downs are harder to screw up.

Both end of the cable must be terminated the same way, and should follow T568-B (orange-white, orange, green-white, blue, blue-white, green, brown-white, brown) tab down.
It's possible you damaged the cable during the install and have an intermittent fault or that the tester has an issue.

At the moment I'm thinking its the tester. But I will make another cable later today checking I get the wires in far enough and that I have the correct color order.
Don't really want to proceed much further with camera installation if I can not get the cables right.

    Hi Tengu,

Test with some pre-made short cables ( aka "known good" ) and see what results you get.

Hey @mat200 good idea.... why didn't I think of that?
Ok.... All "known good" cables passed the test.......So the tester is good

OK, after doing more research and taking all the advice available on this site into account I tried terminating another cable........ with success... all the lights flash 1-8 :headbang:

I also purchased one of these

I think being able to see what I was doing helped

    Great!
Now if I could find something as easily that would restore the feeling and dexterity in my finger tips, I'd be all set! :D

Unless I'm in bright sunlight, I always at least wear one of these while doing rj45's, and the ladies dig it. :)
